The new Volvo XC90 shown with the Swedish maker's President & CEO Hakan Samuelsson.

With today’s unveiling of an all-new XC90, Volvo Cars is giving the world a good look at the many changes that will likely determine the future success of the Swedish automaker.

While echoing the basic shape of the old Volvo XC90, the new ute adopts new, and more luxurious proportions, as well as a more sophisticated interior. But many of the most significant changes aren’t as readily apparent. They include an all-new platform, or architecture, that will serve as the foundation of many future Volvo products.

How Swede It Is!

The new ute, due to market next April, also gets a sophisticated, tablet-style touchscreen display to control everything from its infotainment system to its climate control. The 2016 Volvo XC90 also will see the maker introduce a wide arrange of new Drive-E powertrains, including Volvo’s new plug-in hybrid system designed to deliver both performance and fuel economy, depending on what mode it’s operating in.

Designing Wagons: Volvo V60 R-Design Debuts in NY

Volvo struggles to make wagons sexy.

by on Mar.28, 2013

Volvo is bringing sexy back when it comes to wagons with the new V60 R-Design.

Volvo has had a habit of doing things its own way, which includes selling wagons when those so-called two-box designs didn’t work for just about anyone else.

Even Volvo has had to accept market trends in recent years, and shift to more contemporary crossovers. But with the launch of the sporty new V60 R-Design, Swedish brand is hoping to make wagons, well, almost sexy.

Making its debut at the New York Auto Show, the V60-R isn’t the sort of wood-covered wagon one might have expected from decades past. The show car has a fire red paint job covering its almost coupe-like roofline and long, aggressive nose. But what could provide particular appeal is what’s under the hood, a 329-horsepower version of Volvo’s 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine.

Volvo V40 Cross Country Is a Blend of Wagon and Crossover

New model to feature world's 1st pedestrian airbag.

by on Oct.01, 2012

The Volvo V40 Cross Country will target luxury competitors such as the BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz B-Class.

Say “Volvo” and there’s a good chance your first image will be one of the maker’s traditional, boxy wagons.  While “two-box” designs remain strong in the European market, ute-like styling has become much more prevalent in the rest of the world – and is steadily gaining ground on the Continent, as well.

So, with the Paris Motor Show unveiling of the new V40 Cross Country, Volvo is clearly hoping to deliver a blend of both wagon and CUV. And it’s taking aim at such challenging competitors as the BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz B-Class crossovers.

Based on the current Volvo V40 Hatchback, the Cross Country gains nearly two inches in ride height – while getting larger, black and silver alloy wheels and decidedly chunky bumpers that Volvo apparently believes will give the new model a more robust, go-anywhere appearance.
