Luxury Plug-Ins Shift Emphasis on Performance

Emphasis shifts from mileage.

by on Apr.02, 2018

The production Aviator's fastest powertrain package will pair a turbo-six with electric drive.

When the first hybrids came to market nearly two decades ago, the emphasis was on mileage, the original Honda Insight delivering as much as 70 miles per gallon, albeit at the expense of what might be described as the fun-to-drive factor.

That approach carried over as more advanced, battery-based models came to market – and as luxury brands started to plug in with vehicles like the Cadillac ELR. Based on the Mainstream Chevrolet Volt, Caddy’s first plug-in hybrid was lavishly equipped but took almost 10 seconds to get from 0 to 60.

Performance News!

A visit to this year’s New York Auto Show will reveal a wide array of PHEVs, and among mass market brands, like Chevy, Honda, Hyundai and Toyota, fuel economy is still the primary target. But it’s another matter entirely among luxury brands, such as BMW, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo. There’s no question they’re also using battery power to boost mileage, but they’re also putting a premium on performance.

Volvo Going All Electric or Hybrid on Future Models

Transition to begin in 2019.

by on Jul.05, 2017

Volvo unveiled an all-electric version of its CMA platform at the Shanghai Motor Show.

Volvo is plugging into electric propulsion in a big way, the Swedish-based automaker announcing today that all new models coming after 2019 will use some form of electric propulsion, whether hybrid, plug-in or pure battery-electric.

The announcement follows Volvo’s decision last month to have its Polestar division shift focus to high-performance electric vehicles. But it also underscores the growing emphasis on electrification by luxury automakers, in general, BMW planning to reveal a pure battery-electric version of its iconic 3-Series sedan at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, while Daimler said today it is investing over $700 million in battery-car operations in China.

We Go Beyond the Headlines!

“This announcement marks the end of the solely combustion engine-powered car,” Volvo Cars CEO Hakan Samuelsson said in a statement announcing the decision by the high-line automaker owned by China’s Zhejiang Geely.

Volvo Adding Plug-ins Across Entire Range

And an all-electric model to come by 2019.

by on Oct.15, 2015

The Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine charging.

Volvo is clearly getting charged up over battery power. The Swedish maker, which only recently added its first plug-in hybrid model, plans to add PHEV versions of its entire line-up, and will also introduce its first pure battery-electric vehicle, or BEV, by 2019.

Unlike some competitors, Volvo put an emphasis on performance with its first plug-in, the so-called “Twin Engine” drivetrain introduced on the 2016 Volvo XC90. It is expected to follow a similar strategy with future plug-based models.
