Tesla’s Musk Orders “Flattening” of Management Team as Problems with Safety, Manufacturing Mount

Newest crash also linked to Tesla’s Autopilot system.

Tesla's Elon Musk "flattened" the company's management structure to improve communications.

Facing increasing problems that have raised concerns about both Tesla’s technology and manufacturing operations, CEO Elon Musk has ordered a shake-up of the company’s management structure.

Tesla continues to struggle to meet production targets for its Model 3 battery-sedan, an issue that led to record first-quarter losses. But the company has also found itself in the news because of a series of serious vehicle crashes, at least some of which appear to have occurred while they were operating in the semi-autonomous Autopilot mode.

News Now!

While those crashes could raise concerns about the safety of Tesla’s products, the more immediate threat to the company’s viability is lagging Model 3 production at its Fremont, California assembly plant. In a memo sent to employees, Musk noted he was “flattening (the company’s) management structure to improve communications,” while shifting away from “activities that are not vital to the success of our mission.” (more…)

Finger-Pointing: Tesla and Mobileye Shift Blame Over Autopilot Problems

Who catches blames for Autopilot failures?

Tesla CEO Elon Musk is trading barbs with former supplier Mobileye.

With one death clearly linked to the semi-autonomous Autopilot system and investigations underway in connection with several other crashes, one fatal, battery-carmaker Tesla has found itself under the microscope. So has Mobileye, the Israeli tech start-up that has been providing the camera-on-a-chip system used on Tesla Model S and X battery-electric vehicles.

Following the revelation of the first fatal Autopilot crash, Tesla and Mobileye announced they were parting ways, and that separation is growing anything but amicable. The battery carmaker has said the Tel Aviv-based Mobileye “could not keep pace” with advances in autonomous technology. But Mobileye founder and CEO Amnon Shashua is now firing back in words that almost call out Tesla for being reckless.

The Last Word!

The battery carmaker, he declared in an interview with the Reuters news service, has been “pushing the envelope in terms of safety” with its Autopilot system. (more…)

Tesla Producing More Robust Autopilot with Additional Technology

New system coming "sooner than people think."

Tesla's Elon Musk says an updated Autopilot system will be here "sooner than people think."

With the most recent allegation of a collision while a Tesla Model S was in Autopilot mode, the California-based automaker is hustling up a new version of the semi-autonomous technology that is bolstered with more technology.

Autopilot 2.0 features a new front-facing three-camera array as well as additional radar sensors around the car, according to multiple reports. The additional sensors will supplement the forward-oriented radar already used by system.

Tesla is already installing the new three-camera system housing in cars while the new radar sensors doesn’t come as a surprise as Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk has suggested that would be coming “sooner than people think.” The idea is to create a system that is “lidar-like” without using lidar, which is more expensive.
