Toyota, Subaru Set to Replace Sports Car

No timetable for new versions of BRZ and 86.

Toyota and Subaru are working on a replacement for the sports car each sells, in this case, the Toyota 86.

Toyota and Subaru have started development of a replacement for the two-seat sports car that both companies produce jointly and currently sell under different names.

The Japan Times reported the two automakers have agreed to extend their collaboration to produce replacements for the current versions of the Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ.

Subaru executives are excited about the new Viziv Tourer Concept shown at the Geneva Motor Show.

Subaru continued its themed concept cars with the Viziv Tourer concept at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. The first Viziv concept debuted in 2013 and since then each model has taken on a different them.

This year’s Tourer concept gave Subaru the opportunity to unite symmetrical all-wheel-drive powered by a boxer engine with performance, practicality and functionality to entice people to enjoy traveling by car again.

Subaru Wants Sales to Do More Than Set Records

Subaru's Tom Doll outlines the company's new charitable efforts at the MAMA annual breakfast during the Chicago Auto Show.

Subaru has ambitious plans to sell more vehicles and the effort is based on a deft marketing campaign built around the word love and an emphasis on charitable giving.

During the past decade, as Subaru has become the seventh best-selling brand in the U.S., the Japanese automaker has given away more than $115 million dollars to community-oriented, not-for-profit CoSubaru’s generosity.

With the help of family of charming and well-behaved Golden Retrievers, Subaru officially unveiled a major addition to its product line, the 2019 Subaru Ascent, a family-oriented, three-row crossover vehicle.

Subaru executives note Subaru of America Inc. is building on nine consecutive years of sales growth. Sales have doubled in the just the past five years, added Tom Doll, Subaru of America president.  The addition of a three-row SUV, the largest vehicle Subaru has ever built, will help maintain the company’s sales momentum next year, he added.

Japan’s Auto Safety Scandal Spreads to Subaru

Automaker admits 30-year lapse; will recall over 250,000 vehicles.

Subaru CEO Yasuyuki Yoshinaga bowed to reporters to acknowledge his company's safety lapses.

Subaru acknowledged Friday it improperly inspected products sold on the Japanese market for over 30 years and will recall as many as 255,000 vehicles.

The company is the latest Japanese automaker to reveal faulty inspection practices, Nissan earlier this month reporting similar lapses. The announcement by Subaru comes at a time when the once-lofty image of Japanese industry has been severely tarnished by a raft of scandals that include rigging of fel economy numbers by Mitsubishi, the production of faulty airbags by supplier Takata, and the falsification of data by metals manufacturer Kobe Steel.

“The final inspection process is very important and we acknowledge that we did not meet requirements,” Subaru Chief Executive Officer Yasuyuki Yoshinaga at a news conference on Friday in Tokyo. “We used the same process for more than 30 years without realizing that it did not meet ministry requirements.”

Subaru Evokes the Past for New VIZIV Concept

New concept breaks from SUV past.

Subaru unveiled the sixth iteration of its VIZIV concept vehicles at the Tokyo Motor Show.

Subaru’s latest iteration of its VIZIV line-up is different than the five that proceeded it in one very significant way: It’s not a sport-ute instead a high-performance compact sedan filled with a slew of safety- and comfort-based technology.

The VIZIV Performance Concept is clearly an update to the company’s sports-car heritage, which includes the Legacy, WRX and Impreza. Subaru admits the all-wheel drive models featuring the boxer engine were inspirational.

However, the exterior design is light years different and the aforementioned technology is a big differentiator. That said, it’s tough to ignore the aggressive look highlighted by flared wheel arches, the air scoop on the hood, rear diffuser, twin dual exhausts and large alloy wheels. (more…)

It has been a tough year for most automakers, but Subaru is rolling right along with continual increases.

Subaru, after a dazzling run up in sales during the past decade, is getting ready to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the brand’s debut in the U.S. next year.

During the past six years, Subaru’s sales have doubled and then doubled again and the Subaru is on track to set another sales record in 2017 as it continues to post year-over-year sales increases each month even as the pace of industry sales begins to ebb from its post-recession high.

Subaru Ups the Performance Quotient for 2018 WRX STI and BRZ Models

A long-awaited boost for the little sports coupe shared with Toyota.

Subaru will go after a new record on the Nurburgring - and let buyers share the fun with the debut of the WRX STI Type RA -- or record attempt.

Subaru has apparently been listening to performance aficionados, giving a boost to two of its hottest models for 2018. That’s especially good news for those who have been frustrated by the sporty looking, albeit anemic, BRZ coupe.

But those looking for more power are going to have to move fast. The Japanese maker says it plans to produce just 500 copies of the 2018 Subaru WRX STI Type RA and an equal number of BRZ tS models – both set to arrive sometime around mid-winter.

“The RA designation stands for ‘Record Attempt’ and has been applied to various Subaru performance models,” the maker explains. It adds that, “The original venture took place in 1989 when a competition version Subaru Legacy broke the FIA World Speed Endurance Record by clocking over 62,000 miles in 18 days and set a top speed record of 138 mph.”
