Subaru Teases Next-Gen Impreza with Tokyo Show Car

Viziv Concept offers some hints as to upcoming Tribeca replacement.

by on Oct.28, 2015

The Subaru Impreza Concept was shown in 5-door form, but a 4-door will soon follow.

These days, automakers frequently use “concept cars” to set the stage for a new model that may be coming in just a matter of months. Often times, they’ll give the show cars a catchy, if misleading name to keep media scribes and the public guessing. Subaru didn’t even bother to go that far as it rolled out what it insisted was just a “concept” version of the Impreza at the Tokyo Motor Show on Wednesday.

Sure, a few of the details will likely be changed, but not by much, Subaru acknowledging that the show car reveals “the design direction not only of the new Impreza but of Subaru’s future models as a whole.”

What a Concept!

And for good reason, it turns out. The Subaru Impreza set to reach showrooms next year as a 2017 model will introduce the Japanese maker’s new global architecture, a platform that will be shared by virtually all of its products going forward.

Bragging Rights: Subaru Shows Off with STI Performance Concept

STI unit plans major US expansion.

by on Apr.01, 2015

Subaru debuted its STI Performance Concept at the New York Auto Show today.

There’s nothing wrong with a little bragging, at least if you’ve got something worth crowing about. Subaru has been quite well, thank you, on both road and track, and New York Auto Show-goers will get to see why when they check out the Subaru STI Performance Concept making its debut this week.

The concept car comes at a good moment for the Japanese maker which is planning a major U.S. expansion of its Subaru Tecnica International operations, STI for short. It will focus on three core business operations: aftermarket parts, STI-tune cars – such as the top-line version of the WRX – and motorsports.

“At STI we know from our racing that to win, it is important not only to have high power, but also that all aspects of performance are balanced over the whole car,” said STI President Yoshio Hirakawa. “When we achieve this balance, the driver feels that the car is easy to handle and reliable, and he can use it fully to the limits of its performance. Our plan is to produce cars and accessories that drivers can really enjoy.” (more…)

Subaru Viziv 2 Hints at Maker’s Future Plans

A "future path" that may lead Subaru to the next CrossTrek.

by on Mar.05, 2014

The Subaru Viziv 2 plug-in concept.

Subaru may have tipped its hand, offering a glimpse of what it has coming in the not-too-distant future with the unveiling of the new Viziv 2 concept vehicle at the Geneva Motor Show.

The design of the plug-in hybrid vehicle is a likely forerunner of what we’ll be seeing with the next Subaru CrossTrek, according to company insiders.  The distinctive 4-motor hybrid-electric drive system, meanwhile, could indicate how the Japanese maker will adapt its signature all-wheel-drive systemto the demands for cleaner, more fuel-efficient technology.

Plug In!

The Viziv 2 “signifies a future path” for Subaru, suggested Tomahiko Ikeda, a senior executive with Subaru parent Fuji Heavy Industries, during the concept vehicle’s Geneva debut.  “To progress, we must evolve. The Viziv 2 is an example.”

Subaru to Show Viziv 2 Concept Hybrid in Geneva

by on Feb.24, 2014

Subaru teases the new Viziv 2 concept...but won't say what's inside.

Subaru may have some big news in store for the Geneva Motor Show next month, the maker offering up a teaser of the next-generation Viziv Concept vehicle and hinting that it’ll have more to say about its hybrid plans.

To confuse things a bit, the Subaru Viziv 2 Concept is actually the third show car to use that name, following the earlier Viziv Concept and Viziv Evolution Concept, the latter unveiled only last November at the Tokyo Motor Show.

We'll Keep You Behind the Wheel!

Subaru was slow to the hybrid game, only recently introducing its first model, a gas-electric version of the XV Crosstrek.  But it has hinted there’s more to come – and perhaps we’ll learn a bit when the Viziv 2 makes its debut at Geneva’s PALExpo convention center on March 4th.

Sneak Peek: Subaru Levorg Concept

New sport tourer set for Tokyo debut.

by on Oct.30, 2013

A sleek look for the clunky-sounding Subaru Levorg Concept coming to Tokyo next month.

It’s not the sort of name that rolls easily off the tongue, perhaps, but Subaru is hoping folks will bite when it rolls out the Levorg concept at the Tokyo Motor Show next month.

The Japanese maker explains that the name given this sport tourer prototype is shorthand for “Legacy,” “Revolution” and “Touring.” But what likely will matter is the way the sheet metal looks when it rolls out in mid-November, and the teaser images suggest this is not the classic Subaru box design.

What a Concept!

The good news is that the Fuji Heavy brand will also roll out an assortment of other concept, including the 3-row Crossover 7 Concept and the Cross Sport Design Concept, the first of which could give a hint of the model planned to replace the distinctly unloved Subaru Tribeca, which will finish up its largely unnoticed run at the end of the 2014 model-year.  We’ll also see an updated version of the Viziv hybrid concept first shown at the Geneva Motor Show last March.

Subaru Teases Viziv Concept

Subaru’s “Vision for Innovation” set for unveiling in Geneva.

by on Feb.11, 2013

Subaru plans to offer some insight into its future design and technology direction with the Viziv concept.

It’s clearly auto show season, at least judging by the flood of teaser images we’ve been receiving – including the Subaru Viziv Concept the Japanese maker plans to formally unveil in Geneva.

No, that’s not some Swiss tongue-twister. The name is shorthand for what Subaru dubs its “Vision for Innovation,” which, it adds, “expresses a future vision for innovation, and a concept car suggesting the brand’s direction.”

Your News Source!

We’ve been getting a number of signals from Subaru lately suggesting it’s looking to do more than just update its existing line-up – though the latest Subaru Forester model will also make its European debut next month at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. But Subaru has long hoped to move its brand image a bit up-market while maintaining its reputation for go-anywhere durability.
