Honda Clarity Named Green Car of the Year

Offering fuel cell, EV and PHEV models captured the title for Honda.

by on Nov.30, 2017

Ron Cogan, editor of Green Car Journal, presents Honda's Steven Center with the trophy for the Green Car of the Year: the Honda Clarity.

After years of slow growth, electric propulsion seems to finally be gaining traction, or so one might suspect based on the number of announcements being made just this week at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

More battery-based and hydrogen-powered vehicles than ever are on display at the L.A. Convention Center, with manufacturers promising to add hundreds more hybrids, plug-ins, battery-electric vehicles and fuel-cell vehicles over the next few years.

The L.A. Auto Show also saw the results of a shoot-out between the environmentally friendly vehicles already on the market, with the Honda Clarity being named Green Car of the Year. The decision was based, in part, the editor of Green Car Journal explained, on the fact that Honda is offering three different alternatives of the Clarity: a hydrogen-powered model, a plug-in hybrid and an all-electric version. “Validation” of a breakthrough concept.

by on Nov.20, 2014

BMW's Tom Plucinsky, left, accepts the Green Car of the Year award from Green Car Journal's Ron Cogan.

Squaring off with four tough – but environmentally friendly – competitors, the BMW i3 claimed victory as the Green Car of the Year, an award the maker says “validates” the costly development program behind the breakthrough battery-electric vehicle.

The i3 is the smaller and more affordable of two new battery-based vehicles being offered by the German maker’s new brand-within-a-brand, BMW i. It is offered as either a pure battery-electric vehicle, or with an optional range-extending internal combustion engine that automatically fires up when the batteries run down.

As a ‘Moon Shot,’ Creating a Viable Electric Car is a Challenging Mission

Costs high, obstacles steep; does America have the will to launch this mission?

The most famous electric vehicle in history, the Lunar Buggy was the result of an intense effort that, in today's dollars, cost $100 billion. Do we have the will - and the cash - for the equally challenging effort needed to produce a viable, cost-competitive EV for Planet Earth?

The race to deliver electric vehicles to the market is on and competition is heating up. But like the Apollo Program, success is likely to be measured over many years and will come at great cost. Our friends at Green Car Journal examined the challenges of bringing the EV into the mainstream and shared this analysis with

As we mark the 40th anniversary of successfully landing a man on the moon this month, it’s interesting to note the many comparisons that position electric cars as the next ‘moon shot.’ There are synergies at work since, after all, the Apollo Program’s lunar rover may be the most high-profile electric car in history. But the editors at Green Car Journal caution that even as get-there-at-all-costs momentum builds for electric cars in Washington DC, it’s a giant leap of faith to assume that today’s activities will lead to an affordable all-electric car in your garage anytime soon.

What people overlook is that accomplishing ‘big picture’ programs like Apollo require accepting the concept of unlimited spending to achieve the mission. Current levels of unprecedented federal spending notwithstanding, electric cars are not an exclusive answer to future transportation challenges and consumers will not be willing to buy them at all costs.
