Bosch Says It has Secret to Cleaning Diesel Emissions

Fix could save the diesel engine — in Europe anyway.

Bosch CEO Volkmar Denner says the company has resolved the issue of diesel emissions.

Nearly three years after the start of “dieselgate” and Volkswagen’s nearly complete switch from diesels to battery electrics, auto supplier Robert Bosch GmbH says it has developed a method for cutting emissions from diesels to levels well below U.S. and European requirements.

If true, the move could save the diesel — at least in Europe where a number of cities are enacting bans on vehicles with emissions above certain levels.

“There’s a future for diesel,” Bosch CEO Volkmar Denner says in a statement announcing the breakthrough alongside the organization’s annual meeting in Stuttgart. “Today, we want to put a stop, once and for all, to the debate about the demise of diesel technology.” (more…)

Bosch Allegedly Helped VW Hide Diesel Problem

Supplier played a "crucial role" in hiding truth.

VW supplier Robert Bosch GmbH is named in a recent court filing regarding the hiding of the automaker's diesel problem.

Volkswagen AG has already either paid out or is on the hook for more than $15.3 billion in fines and penalties related to its diesel emissions scandal.

Now one of the company’s top suppliers, Robert Bosch GmbH, is facing charges that it helped cover up VW’s cheating on emission tests, according to a lawyer for U.S. owners of VW vehicles equipped with the affected diesel engines.

In a filing late Tuesday in U.S. District Court in San Francisco, lawyers cited confidential documents turned over by the German automaker to plaintiffs attorneys in making the new allegations against the auto supplier. (more…)
