by on Aug.05, 2015

Audi bumps premium luxury performance up a notch with the addition of the new S8 Plus.

Audi is upping the ante in the premium luxury sedan market, taking aim at competitors like the Mercedes-AMG S63 with its new S8 Plus.

Claiming to deliver the highest power-to-weight in its segment, the new model punches out 596-horsepower from its overboosted V-8, enough to launch from 0 to 100 kmh (0 to 62 mph) in just 3.8 seconds, with a “derestricted” top speed of 189 mph.

Ford Will Build New Lincoln Continental Alongside Mustang, Fusion

Flagship sedan set to debut in 2016.

by on Jul.16, 2015

Ford CEO Mark Fields with the Lincoln Continental Concept during its NY Auto Show debut.

Ford Motor Co. has revealed plans to produce its new luxury flagship, the Lincoln Continental, at the Flat Rock Assembly Plant where it will roll down the line alongside the Ford Mustang and Fusion models.

The Continental will be the most significant effort in years by Ford to revive the fortunes of its long-struggling Lincoln brand. Ostensibly a replacement for the outgoing MKS sedan, it will move Lincoln up-market, in line with rival Cadillac’s new CT6 flagship sedan.

The Flat Rock plant is one of the maker’s most important U.S. assembly plants, and also one of its most flexible, capable of producing both front-wheel-drive models like the Fusion, as well as the rear-drive Mustang. Lincoln has not yet disclosed specific details about the Continental drivetrain but it is expected to offer an all-wheel-drive version, in keeping with trends in the premium luxury market.

Mercedes-Benz Reveals New S63 AMG 4Matic

Pulse-pounding comfort.

by on Jul.17, 2013

The 2014 Mercedes S63 AMG 4Matic is faster than a Porsche 911 Carrera S.

So what happens if you try to improve on the “ultimate” premium luxury sedan, a term one hears from the folks at Mercedes-Benz when discussing the new 2014 S-Class?  The answer appears to be the upcoming Mercedes S63 AMG 4Matic.

Churning out 577 horsepower, enough the launch the Teutonic tank from 0 to 60 in just 3.9 seconds, the S63 AMG model adds yet another level of performance and technical sophistication to a new-for’-14 S-Class that already boasts some serious cajones.

Meanwhile, the addition of the 4Matic designation highlights the German maker’s recent announcement that virtually all of its future AMG models will come standard with all-wheel-drive — the rare exceptions including the Mercedes-Benz SL roadster and SLS supercar.

First Drive: 2014 Hyundai Equus

A premium luxury sedan without the premium price tag.

by on Jul.16, 2013

Hyundai has made some modest but notable changes to the 2014 Equus sedan.

It’s a big year for premium luxury car buyers, what with some major new products hitting market in the months ahead – notably including an all-new version of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. But while Hyundai isn’t starting from the ground up with the 2014 Equus update, the big sedan is impressive any way you approach it.

The elegant sedan’s long, sleek silhouette conveys an enhanced sense of luxury, style and sophistication that is harder to ignore with the update for the 2014 model-year. Hyundai’s decision to update the Equus might, in fact, seem surprising since it was seemingly introduced only yesterday.

In fact, the Hyundai Equus made its American debut in 2010, and a lot has happened in the luxury market since then, as the new S-Class underscores. So, Hyundai’s timing is on target, enhancing the visual appeal of the 2014 sedan, adding a mix of new features and tweaking the car’s performance and handling.

2014 Mercedes S-Class a Technical Tour de Force

New flagship features 500 LED lamps, 455 horsepower, stereo cameras -- and a hot-stone massage seat.

by on May.16, 2013

Mercedes redesigns its flagship S-Class for 2014.

There was a time when luxury cars were defined by their sheer size and mass, their power, performance and, of course, exclusive details like leather seats and wood trim.

Those are all factors that help distinguish the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, as you might expect, but there’s a lot more to the completely redefined German flagship that fit the changing nature of the auto industry.  From its 500 LED lamps to the 3D cameras, radar and night vision systems that allow the new sedan to virtually drive itself, the new S-Class is a technical tour de force that will likely have competitors racing to catch up.

The long-awaited remake of the classic full-size luxury sedan was staged at an Airbus factory in Hamburg, Germany – no surprise because parent Mercedes-Benz also holds a stake in the European airline manufacturer. But the venue was clearly chosen to underscore the technical sophistication of the new S-Class.

First Look: 2013 Lexus LS 460

Putting some passion into the flagship.

by on Jul.31, 2012

Lexus delivers a more passionate take on its LS flagship, the new LS 460 F Sport shown here.

Few cars did more to revolutionize the market than the original 1990 Lexus LS 400, a flagship for Toyota’s new luxury marque and proof positive the Japanese really could go toe-to-toe with the best of the German competition.

In the nearly quarter-century since the LS line first appeared, however, Lexus has played it increasingly safe, especially when it has come to design, no wonder the big 4-door has lately lost ground to the more aggressive Europeans.  But during the preview of the smaller Lexus GS last year, Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda promised to punch some more passion into the brand — and the 2013 Lexus LS 460 that debuted in San Francisco last night is a clear indication of what he meant.

At a gathering of 500 invited guests from the San Francisco arts and design community, Lexus actually showed up four different versions of the flagship sedan: the “base” LS 460, the long-wheelbase LS 460L, the LS 600h and the new LS 460 F- Sport, a more aggressive addition to the line-up.

First Look: 2013 Cadillac XTS

Caddy inadvertently releases pic ahead of public preview.

by on Nov.11, 2011

Cadillac will officially unveil the new 2013 XTS sedan at next week's L.A. Auto Show.

There are some basic rules on the Internet, like being careful before hitting “Reply All,” and for an automaker like Cadillac making sure you don’t publish a pic on your consumer website before you want the media to find it.

But that’s precisely what General Motors did when it put up a shot of the new Cadillac XTS, the big luxury sedan that will be making its debut at the L.A. Auto Show next week.  Caught in the act, so to speak, the General Motors division decided to make it official confirming what everyone already knew.

The XTS is likely to be one of the most important products Cadillac has released in years.  It replaces two slow-selling models: the rear-drive STS and front-drive DTS, and is aimed at providing a more upscale compliment to the brand’s current best-seller, the midsize CTS.
