Porsche CEO Oliver Blume introduces four new Porsches at this year's Los Angeles Auto Show.

The influence of the California market has on the management of Porsche AG was clearly on display during the press days leading into the Los Angeles Auto Show as the German sports car maker unveiled not one but four new sports cars and the new Porsche Cayenne in the U.S. for the first time.

Oliver Blume, Porsche’s chief executive officer, noted that if California was an independent country, it would be Porsche’s fifth-largest market and Porsche has always paid attention to the preferences of enthusiasts in California who have been instrumental in shaping the Porsche product line throughout the company’s life.

VW Investing Over $40b on EVs, Autonomous Vehicles

German automaker ups ante in increasingly costly tech battle.

The VW I.D. Crozz concept will become a production battery-electric SUV.

Volkswagen AG said Friday it will spend over 34 billion Euros, or $40 billion between now and 2022 on electrified powertrain technology, autonomous vehicles and other futuristic concepts, aiming to leapfrog key competitors like General Motors and Toyota.

VW already announced plans to offer electrified variants of every model sold by its dozen passenger car brands, including 50 all-electric models, between now and 2025. It also is developing electrified commercial vehicles.

“We are laying the foundation for making Volkswagen the world’s number-one player in electric mobility by 2025,” Chief Executive Matthias Müller said. “The entire automotive industry is facing fundamental changes in the coming years, which will provide great opportunities, but also require us to put in tremendous efforts.”

Drivers Now Can “Subscribe” For Access to Up to 22 Different Porsche Models

German maker joins growing list of automakers experimenting with new purchase, ownership models.

The third-generation 2018 Porsche Cayenne is part of the German maker's new "subscription" service.

Looking for a Porsche but not sure what you want? Maybe you’d like a 911 for the workweek, a Cayenne for getting away over the weekend.

Now, you won’t have to choose, at least not if you live near the German maker’s U.S. headquarters in Atlanta and sign up for the new Porsche Passport program. The pilot program will offer two subscription levels and, for a price tag of up to $3,000 a month, you’ll be able to slip behind the wheel of as many as 22 different Porsche models pretty much whenever you want.

The subscription program is one of a number of new retail programs automakers are launching in the U.S. – some running as pilots, others reaching out to all potential buyers. The same day the German maker announced the Porsche Passport, Hyundai introduced its own Shopper Assurance program which will include a three-day, money-back guarantee. (more…)

Porsche’s Mission E Compounds Problems for Tesla, Could Cripple Model S

Tesla's Model S is facing pricing issues, in part, due to increased competition, like the upcoming Porsche Mission E.

For Tesla, the good news is that there are more than enough buyers standing in line for the new Model 3 than the California carmaker can handle through at least early 2019. The bad news is that demand has been sliding for the older Models S and X, forcing Tesla to slash prices by as much as $30,000.

And the challenge could soon get even tougher – for both Tesla’s high-line and lower-end products – as a flood of new competitors enter the market.

That includes the Porsche Mission E, the German maker’s eagerly awaited first battery-electric vehicle. Set to go on sale in 2019, the German automaker’s CEO this month said that it will enter the market with a base price of “an entry-level Panamera,” or somewhere just south of $90,000. It might seem hard to believe but there was a time, not all that long ago, when skeptics predicted Porsche’s imminent demise. How, they asked, could a company known for sleek sports cars like the 911 ever imagine selling a sport-utility vehicle?

Well, we all know how that turned out. The Porsche Cayenne has been the German maker’s best-selling product almost since the day it debuted, encouraging it to add a second SUV, the Macan, to its line-up a couple years back. Indeed, the success of the Cayenne ushered in a dramatic shift in the high-line luxury market, just about every exotic brand now offering at least one SUV. And those, like Aston Martin, who don’t have any are rushing to join the crowd.

Porsche, Ford Rated “Ideal” by Owners in New Study

Survey encompasses 54,000 vehicle owners.

Porsche was not only top brand but also had three segments winner with products like the 911.

Live with someone long enough and you’re sure to find some things you’d like to change. The same is true with a car, truck or crossover. Yet, some vehicles seem to come closer to the mark right from the moment they’re driven off the dealer lot.

Which ones? That’s what research firm AutoPacific Inc. set out to determine with this year’s Ideal Vehicle Awards. It’s based on a survey of 54,000 motorists who own 2016 and 2017 vehicles who were asked what changes they would make to those products. And Porsche and Ford were the brands that came closest to getting it right, right from the start.

“Even the most satisfied owner would change something about their vehicle if given the opportunity,” said the research firm’s President George Peterson. “AutoPacific’s IVAs identify vehicles whose owners want the least amount of change – those that are truly hitting the mark with owners.”

Audi Slashing $12b in Costs to Cover Electrification Goal

Luxury marque needs to offset cost of diesel emissions scandal.

Audi showed off its e-Tron Sportback Concept at this year's Shanghai Motor Show.

As it shifts away from its long dependence on diesel powertrains, Audi is looking to rapidly ramp up its electrification program, but the luxury arm of Volkswagen Group will have to slash spending to cover the costs of its new technology.

Audi intends to cut costs by 10 billion euros, or $12 billion, by 2022 to support its aggressive shift to electrification, according to a report by Germany’s Handelsblatt business publication.

That money will help it bring to market five all-new battery-electric vehicles, or BEVs, as well as a range of plug-in hybrids and conventional hybrids, according to the report.

America’s Love Affair With the Car Hasn’t Ended, Finds New JD Power Study

Porsche led the latest APEAL study overall, three models, like the 911 also winning their segments.

It’s become conventional wisdom that Americans have fallen out of love with the automobile and would just as soon click on a smartphone app to call a ride-sharing service as actually own a vehicle.

But that doesn’t seem to pan out when you read the results of the latest APEAL study by J.D. Power and Associates. If anything, a summary of the report suggests “car owners’ love affair with new vehicle is stronger than ever.”

Power to the People!

“Many automakers are getting better and better at giving consumers what they want in a vehicle,” explained Dave Sargent head of global automotive research at Power. That’s especially true in mainstream market segments, he added, as “non-premium vehicles” add more and more of the safety and infotainment technologies traditionally reserved for high-line products.

Mercedes-Benz Parent Daimler Recalling 3m Diesels to Fix Emissions Systems

Porsche CEO says maker may abandon diesel technology.

Mercedes decided not to offer diesel models, like this ML320 BlueTec, in the U.S. for 2017.

Daimler AG plans to spend about $255 million to recall and repair 3 million diesel vehicles that are at the center of a probe looking at whether the automaker rigged them to illegally pass emissions tests.

The automaker has been accused of using a so-called “defeat device,” an approach similar to that used by Volkswagen AG to rig 11 million diesel vehicles sold around the world. The Daimler recall, for now, is limited to models sold in Europe. But an investigation is underway in the U.S., as well, the Environmental Protection Agency stating it is “continuing to evaluate light-duty vehicles from a number of manufacturers.”

Clearing the Air!

Separately, the CEO of Porsche AG said the automaker is considering whether to halt the sale of diesels all together. Porsche shared one of the two rigged diesels produced by its parent Volkswagen in a number of different models.

VW CEO Mueller Target of Criminal Probe

Despite concerns about role in diesel scandal, Audi CEO Stadler gets new contract.

VW CEO Matthias Mueller his now at the center of an investigation by German prosecutors over the ongoing diesel emissions scandal.

Already focused on a number of former Volkswagen employees, German prosecutors today said they are also investigating the possible role CEO Matthias Mueller may have played in the attempt to cover up VW’s diesel emissions scandal.

Specifically, Mueller and at least two others may have failed to properly informed regulators and investors soon enough once they learned that Volkswagen engineers had developed a so-called defeat device in an attempt to fool diesel vehicle emissions tests.

Even while the probe expands, however, news reports from Germany indicate Rupert Stadler, the CEO of VW’s Audi luxury brand, will have his contract extended five years. Though well-rated for his handling of Audi overall, Stadler has come under fire for his own, alleged role in the diesel scandal. (more…)
