A police tests the bullet-stopping power of an armored Ford Explorer Police Interceptor.

In a nation armed to the teeth, police officers are increasingly finding themselves coming under assault from criminals and terrorists who may sport some serious firepower.

Ford aims to provide better protection, at least while officers are cruising in one of its police interceptors, such as the Ford Explorer. The Detroit maker is beefing up those cruisers with armor designed to resist conventional arms and even armor-piercing bullets.

LA Mayor Eric Garcetti, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck, and BMW VP Petter Witt in the new i3.

It’s not exactly the sort of car likely to strike fear in the hearts of seasoned criminals, but the Los Angeles Police Department has added a new tool to its fleet of cruisers, a modified version of the BMW i3 battery-electric vehicle.

Decked out in the LAPD’s familiar black-and-white, with the motto, “to protect and to serve,” emblazoned on its doors, the pint-sized EV will be put on patrol in downtown L.A. as part of the city’s efforts to green its government fleet.

In the Pursuit of News!

The i3 joins an assortment of unusual police cars cruising streets around the world, a list that includes supercars like the Lamborghini Huracan and Ferrari FF, as well as a hearse. Some are used for high-speed freeway pursuits, but others serve as part of community campaigns emphasizing safety or simply to put a more friendly face on the local constabulary.

Keegan, a K9 officer, helped Ford unveil the automaker's new Police Interceptor unit today.

Ford has gone to the dogs! Failing to remember the sage advice attributed — falsely — to W.C. Fields, “Never work with children or animals,” Ford clearly forgot the second half of the famous line in Chicago today when it enlisted the assistance of Keegan, a Belgian, to pull the cover off its new police interceptor model.

Fortunately, Ford had little to worry about in regard to the well-trained Belgian, who performed the task right on cue and even took the time to pose with the new model afterward.

Since its introduction three years ago, the Interceptor has become the top-selling law enforcement vehicle in the country. But Ford is responding to requests to make it an even more effective tool for crime fighters, a number of changes based on recommendations from a 25-member Police Advisory Board.

“Our Police Interceptor Utility is the best-selling police vehicle in America because we have a unique relationship with our customers,” said Jonathan Honeycutt, Ford’s North American marketing manager for Police Vehicles. “By listening to the Ford Police Advisory Board, we have engineered a vehicle that officers love.”
