Nissan Aims to Add 8 New EVs, Boost Electrified Vehicle Sales to 1 Mil Annually

Japanese maker also planning 20 autonomous models.

One of the new EVs will be based on the Nissan IMx concept that debuted at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show.

Already the world’s largest seller of battery-electric vehicles, Nissan is targeting sales of 1 million electrified models by 2022, a five-year, six-fold increase, officials said Friday at the company’s headquarters in Yokohama.

The second-largest of Japan’s automakers also plans to add 20 new autonomous models by 2022, while having all of its vehicles, both under the Nissan and Infiniti brands, equipped with connected car technology.

“The heart of our strategy in terms of electrification is battery EVs and e-Power technology,” Nissan Chief Planning Officer Philippe Klein told reporters during a media briefing. E-Power is the company’s term for vehicles using gasoline engines to extend range.


Nissan Leaf Breaks EV Sales Record for U.S. – Again

Maker tracking to hit 30,000 units.

The Nissan Leaf broke it's on single-year sales record, which it set last year, with two months left this year.

And the winner is…the Nissan Leaf! Again.

The best-selling electric vehicle in the world set a new annual sales record in the U.S. with two months to spare. Through September, the company sold 21,822 Leafs and was on pace to beat the previous high of 22,610 in 2013.

The 2011 Nissan Leaf is making its full public debut in Tokyo this week, where CEO Carlos Ghosn announced plans for a new Infiniti battery car.

The 2011 Nissan Leaf is making its public debut in Tokyo this week, where CEO Carlos Ghosn announced plans for an Infiniti battery car.

Nissan Motor Co. is going big for electric power, the automaker confirmed during its Tokyo Motor Show news conference today.

The automaker’s CEO Carlos Ghosn revealed Nissan’s luxury division, Infiniti, will add a compact four-door battery car to its line-up.  It will join a fast-expanding array of Nissan electric vehicles.

While Ghosn declined to provide details, he noted that the Infiniti model will comply with the brand’s motto of “inspired performance.”

Ghosn drove onto the stage, at Makuhari Messe, in a tandem two-seat battery car, dubbed the Land Glider.  But it appears unlikely the unusual, narrow-gauge model will be among the new zero-emission alternatives to reach production.

Earlier this year, Ghosn revealed that the flagship Nissan brand will introduce its first battery-electric vehicle, or BEV, in 2011.  And a battery version of the NV200 commercial van is under development, as well, the Brazilian-born executive, who also serves as CEO of Nissan’s Alliance partner, Renault, revealed in Tokyo.
