Lincoln Double-Digit Sales Increase in 2017 Led by China

U.S. sales were down slightly last year by 0.5%.

Lincoln opened its 100th dealership in China last year and hopes to have that number up to 125 by the end of 2018.

Lincoln’s long and winding road back to prominence appears to be leading in the right direction as the luxury brand reported its global sales increased 13% to 188,383 vehicles in 2017 compared with last year’s results.

The brand has been working diligently to resurrect its product line-up for the last three years, including a focus on sales in China, which is the new haven for luxury brands. Lincoln’s not alone in looking to make hay in China, Cadillac’s been doing it for years as has Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

Volkswagen Offering Performance Passat GT

Volkswagen introduced the Passat GT performance sedan in Detroit.

Volkswagen’s improving results in the U.S. have been bolstered by its expanded sport-utility line-up, but the maker is also providing its loyal Passat owners something new for 2018: the Passat GT.

The new performance model, which was designed at the company’s North American design and engineering center in Chattanooga, Tennessee, bows at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Ford Orders 2,900 Rangers With Takata Airbags Parked

Automaker will fix trucks in owners' driveways, tow them to dealerships.

Owners of certain 2006 Ford Rangers are being told to park their trucks immediately as part of a recall to repair faulty Takata airbags.

The 21st victim of exploding Takata airbags is causing Ford to warn owners of about 2,900 Ranger pickup trucks to park them immediately.

The victim, Steve Mollohan of Hedgesville, West Virginia, was killed July 1, when the airbag exploded in his 2006 Ford Ranger. Ford received notification of the fatality in mid-December and conducted an inspection of the truck on Dec. 27.

After looking into the incident, it was determined the inflator for the airbag was made on the same day as one that caused the death of a South Carolina man in 2015. This prompted the automaker to issue an urgent new recall in the U.S. and Canada for Rangers made on that day. (more…)

Honda plans to unveil the Insight Prototype at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next week.

Honda continues to expand its electrified offerings and will show off its Insight Prototype at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next week, and provided an early look today.

The Insight prototype is likely not going to vary much from the actual Insight, which is slated to hit dealerships later this year. It’ll be the automakers fifth electrified vehicle and it will be built alongside the Honda Civic and CR-V in Indiana.

Mini Upgrades the Mite that Started It All for 2018

The the new year, Mini gave its original two-door and four-door model as well as the convertible a freshening.

Mini’s been tweaking much of its line-up for the past two years adding more space, new technology or a mix of both, but it’s finally gotten to the original two- and four-door hardtop and convertible with a few new updates.

Perhaps the most noticeable update will be the new LED tail lamps with the Union Jack design, which were created as a supplement to the new LED headlights. The optional lighting provides brighter lighting, improving safety and enhancing performance.

Not far behind is an updated Mini logo, which appears on the bonnet, tailgate, steering wheel, central instrument display, remote control and optional driver’s side puddle lighting all models. It is a re-interpretation of the existing logo and now features a two-dimensional “flat design.” (more…)

Chevrolet is getting back in to the big truck game with all new 4500HD and 5500HD models for 2019.

The ongoing truck battle between Ford and Chevy is heating up again as Chevrolet confirmed today it’s getting back into the Class 4 and 5 segments with new models for the 2019 model year after a decade-long absence.

The maker released a teaser shot that implies an aggressive looking front end, but not much else. The company plans to unveil the new models at the The Work Truck Show 2018 in Indianapolis in early March. The show is the largest fleet operator-focused truck show in the country.

Hyundai revealed its second-generation fuel cell electric vehicle at CES 2018, the NEXO.

Hyundai finally revealed the name for its next-generation fuel cell electric vehicle, Nexo, at CES 2018, after it gave the world a look at the crossover late last week, but provided no details.

Nexo not only comes equipped with a revolutionary propulsion system, it also gets the South Korean automakers intelligent Advanced Driver Assistance System, which Hyundai calls “a glimpse at the future of transportation.”

Takata Airbag Recall Expands Again

Takata is recalling another 3.3 million airbags as part of the largest recall in U.S. history.

The largest recall in U.S. history only continues to expand as Takata announced the recall of 3.3 million more faulty airbag inflators.

The newest action from the now bankrupt supplier covers frontal airbags in certain 2009, 2010 and 2013 Honda, Toyota, Audi, BMW, Daimler Vans, Fiat Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru and Tesla models.

China Seeks to Add AI to 50% of Vehicles by 2020

The pollution in China has gotten so bad due, in part, to scenes like this. The government is implementing plans to cut it down.

China continues to set the pace when it comes to implementing new technology. The National Development and Reform Commission, or NDRC, wants to implement artificial intelligence technology in at least half of all its new cars by 2020.

The government also plans to cover 90% of its large cities and highways with a wireless network so the cars can talk to each other and the roads, according to the government agency.

These actions are part of a comprehensive national smart car strategy the NDRC is seeking public back for, it said in a statement. It’s part of the country’s plan to be the world leader in AI by 2025, with the goal of China’s automakers being seen as producing quality smart cars by 2035. (more…)
