Three-unit plan could unlock value of each, analysts claim.

by on Aug.24, 2017

Daimler AG CEO Dieter Zetsche is developing a plan to split Mercedes-Benz into three distinct entities.

Mercedes is getting a new model. Not a new vehicle, but the brand may be split into three separate businesses in the near future, according to new report.

Daimler, Mercedes’ parent company, is developing a new corporate holding structure, according to Manager Magzin, a German business publication. The plan, which is being spearheaded by Daimler AG CEO Dieter Zetsche, is expected to be unveiled at the company’s general meeting in April 2019.

Daimler Accused of Selling More Than 1M Cars With Illegal Defeat Devices

Company's stock takes heavy hit as a result.

by on Jul.13, 2017

Daimler AG, Mercedes-Benz parent, stands accused of selling more than 1 million diesel-powered cars equipped with a cheating device.

Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler AG appears to be the latest automaker to face accusations of rigging vehicles with “defeat device” technology in order to illegally pass emissions tests, according to a major German newspaper.

The report, by the Sueddeutsche Zeitung, sent shares of the automakers skidding in European trading on Thursday, though several industry analysts now say they don’t expect the report – if accurate to trigger the sort of massive blow to Daimler that was felt by Volkswagen AG. VW has so far spent about $30 billion as a result of its own diesel emissions scandal, while also having to repair or buy back as many as 11 million vehicles.

Product News!

According to the report, vehicles with excess emissions were sold in Europe and the United States between 2008 and 2016. Notably, Mercedes chose to withdraw its diesel models from the U.S. market this year rather than trying to get their emissions certified. (more…)

Mercedes-Benz and Hyundai have pulled their ads from "The O'Reilly Factor" after allegations of sexual harassment were leveled against the host.

Mercedes-Benz and Hyundai have moved their advertising off the Fox News Channel’s “O’Reilly Factor” after new allegations of sexual harassment were leveled against the program’s host, Bill O’Reilly.

“The allegations are disturbing and, given the importance of women in every aspect of our business, we don’t feel this is a good environment in which to advertise our products right now,” Mercedes said in a statement released after the advertising was shifted to other programing.

Donna Boland, manager of corporate communications for Mercedes Benz USA, told the trade publication Variety the automaker will instead run advertising on other programming carried on the Fox News Channel, which is owned by 21st Century Fox-owned outlet. (more…)

Daimler AG, the parent of the Mercedes-Benz and Smart brands, plans to accelerate its battery-electric vehicle program and now plans to have at least 10 BEVs on the market by 2022, about three years ahead of its earlier target.

Plug-Ins You Won’t Have to Plug In?

Wireless charging set to simplify operation for owners.

by on Mar.20, 2017

A schematic illustration of how the Mercedes-Benz S550e can charge up wirelessly.

In the not-too-distant future, your plug-in may not need to be plugged in.

When the 2018 Mercedes-Benz S550e makes its debut later this year, the plug-in hybrid will not need to be tethered to a charging station to top off its batteries, at least not if an owner has access to use the new Halo systems developed by San Diego-based Qualcomm. All they’ll need to do is position the big Benz sedan over an inductive mat.

Beyond the Headlines!

Similar technology is already becoming commonplace for cellphones such as the Samsung Galaxy Edge. And a number of automakers, including Honda, Fiat Chrysler and General Motors, are building wireless phone charging mats into their vehicles. But the next step is to amp up the technology so it can wirelessly charge plug-based vehicles.

by on Jan.31, 2017

A subscriber orders a car through the Uber app.

Use the ride-sharing app on your smartphone and you’re likely to have a driver pull up in some basic econobox. Sign up for one of the car-sharing services and you’ll usually find a similarly no-frills model waiting as you rent by the hour.

But Mercedes-Benz wants to take things a bit upscale as it announces new deals with Uber, the largest American ride-sharing service, and short-term rental company Car2Go.

Product News!

Automakers from around the world have been rushing to find new ways to expand into new mobility services ventures. General Motors, for one, went so far as to invest $500 million into Uber’s prime competitor, Lyft, last year. But the new Mercedes-Benz deals could give reason for upscale motorists to try out ride and car-sharing alternatives.
