The Mazda Vision Coupe: the shape of things to come?

Mazda has never been shy about looking into the future. Over the years, it has signaled its design direction with a series of striking concept vehicles – and this year is no exception, though the small Japanese automaker is actually presenting two crystal-balls-on-wheels at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show.

One of these show cars offers a relatively near-term view of things to come, the Kai Concept believed to be hewing closely to what we’ll see with the next-generation Mazda3 hatchback. It picks up on what the automaker calls “a more mature expression” of the design language first introduced with the Kodo concept in 2010.

Pushing the proverbial envelope a step further is the Mazda Vision Coupe, a striking, long-nosed prototype that would be impressive even if unveiled by such European luxury brands as BMW or Audi. Says Mazda, it “embodies a minimalist Japanese aesthetic, achieving a simple ‘one-motion’ form that conveys a sense of speed.”

Mazda Reveals New Design Direction with Koeru Concept

Automaker’s show car aims to “go beyond.”

by on Sep.17, 2015

Mazda's Koeru concept hints at the evolving direction of the maker's distinctive design language.

With its sweeping lines, blacked out B pillars and floating roof, the Mazda Koeru is one of the more distinctive concept vehicles to make its debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. It’s also one of the more likely to influence future design direction.

While they seldom actually go into production, Mazda has a long history of telegraphing its styling strategy through its concept vehicles, and the Koeru is the latest example. It picks up and builds upon the Japanese maker’s current Kodo design language.

Auto Show News!

It wasn’t an accident that Mazda decided to go with a crossover body style for the new concept vehicle, after traditionally favoring coupes and sedans. Insiders say the first examples of where Koeru’s lines will reappear could be replacements for the Mazda CX-9 and CX-7 crossover vehicles.

Mazda SkyActiv Diesel Making First US Appearance

Takeri concept may reappear as next-gen Mazda6.

by on Apr.03, 2012

The next Mazda6? The Takeri concept will reappear in NY - and will notably feature the new SkyActiv-D diesel.

Technically, the Mazda concept vehicle that will be unveiled in New York, this week, is staging its North American, rather than global debut.  Known as the Takerei, it was first shown at the Tokyo Motor Show, last autumn.  But Mazda had little to say about the prototype back then, except to note the name – in Japanese – means “male.”

The maker is revealing a bit more as it prepares for the NYIAS unveiling – although it’s still keeping a few secrets.  Most significantly, it describes Takerei as “a vehicle of mid-size sedan proportions.” And considering that Mazda is preparing to update its aging Mazda6 model, it seems reasonably likely that the concept will soon reappear in production trim – or at least heavily influence the upcoming Mazda6 replacement.

Meanwhile, the other significant detail is that the Takerei concept is powered by Mazda’s new SkyActiv-D diesel powertrain.
