First Look: 2019 BMW X4

Longer, lower, wider.

by on Feb.14, 2018

The 2019 BMW X4 grows in all dimensions but one, with its roofline lowered a mere 0.1 inches.

BMW is blowing a kiss to fans of its Sports-Activity Vehicle line-up, giving a first look on Valentine’s Day at the next-generation X4.

The Bavarian automaker has been filling in just every possible niche with its SAVs, most recently debuting the new X2 so, it seems, it’s heading back to refresh the rest of the line-up. If you get a sense of déjà vu, no surprise, considering the 2019 X4 shares most of its underpinnings with the latest BMW X3.

New Product News!

“The second-generation BMW X4 brings together a distinctive, dynamic silhouette with a clear, pared-back use of forms,” says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design.

It’s Official: Rolls-Royce SUV Will be Named Cullinan

A diamond in the rough?

by on Feb.13, 2018

Project Cullinan is about to make its debut as the Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

Surprise: Rolls-Royce plans to call its first-ever SUV the Cullinan. Oh, wait, you already knew? Well, the reality is that folks inside the British maker have been referring to the ultra-luxurious  ute for some time as “Project Cullinan,” but the company only now is making that the official choice for the production model.

So, with a little less than shock value to the name, Rolls has also released an assortment of pictures of what it prefers to call a “high-bodied vehicle.”  And, if you’re wondering, it’s an appropriate moniker for something targeting the world’s most affluent motorists, making reference to the largest diamond ever discovered.

Product News!

“The name Cullinan has been hiding in plain sight since we revealed it as the project name some years ago,” explained Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer of Rolls-Royce. “It is the most fitting name for our extraordinary new product. Just like the Cullinan Diamond, the largest flawless diamond ever found, it emerges when it is perfect and exists above all others.”

Maserati Set to Launch 2nd SUV in 2020

Critical to business plan, says CEO Marchionne.

by on Oct.26, 2017

The Maserati Levante has quickly become the Italian brand's best-selling model.

With the Levante already the most popular model in its history, Maserati is readying a second SUV, CEO Sergio Marchionne has revealed, a critical step in meeting the luxury brand’s business plan.

The new model, Marchionne hinted during this week’s Fiat Chrysler Automobiles earnings conference call, will be smaller than the midsize five-seat Levante. That would position the Italian luxury brand in one of the world’s fastest-growing market segments and target competitors ranging from the Jaguar E-Pace to the Porsche Macan.

Beyond the Headlines!

Maserati sold about 40,000 vehicles last year, the Levante largely responsible for a 27% year-over-year increase. But the maker’s target is somewhere closer to 80,000, and EBIT earnings of 1 billion euros. “We should be able to get there” with the addition of a second ute, Marchionne said during the call with investors and journalists.

BMW Concept X7 Offers a Big Counterpoint to the Classic 7-Series Sedan

Production version expected for 2019 model-year.

by on Sep.08, 2017

The BMW Concept X7 shares the same CLAR architecture as the current 7-Series.

Full-size luxury cars like the 7-Series may still provide the halo that helps define brands like BMW, but sales have been steadily dwindling in recent years, in large part due to the broader shift from passenger cars to light trucks.

That’s one reason why we saw Audi unveil the Q8 concept at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit last January. And as we prepare for the big Frankfurt Motor Show next week, BMW is ready to follow suit with its Concept X7 iPerformance model.

Auto Show News!

While officially being referred to as a “show car,” few observers doubt that what the Bavarian automaker has already begun teasing will soon join the BMW line-up as a counterpoint to both the 7-Series sedan, and the new 8-Series coupe.

BMW Unveils 3rd Generation X3 and First-Ever M-Edition

Bigger, lighter, more powerful.

by on Jun.26, 2017

BMW is adding the first true performance version of the X3 with the debut of the M40i.

BMW has rolled out a steady stream of hits since opening up its Spartanburg, South Carolina assembly plant more than two decades ago. And now, it’s updating one of the most popular of those models with the debut of the 2018 BMW X3 Sport-Activity Vehicle.

With the launch of the third-generation ute, BMW has opted for evolution, rather than revolution, though there are enough changes to likely catch the fancy of compact crossover fans. Among other things, the Bavarian maker is introducing the first M version of the X3, albeit the mid-range M Performance line.

The new X3 comes along at a perfect time considering the radical shift in consumer demand. Even luxury buyers have migrated from sedans to utes. At the same time, that’s something that’s landed on the radar of key competitors, Jaguar just announcing plans to launch its second SUV model, the compact E-Pace, for 2018.

Jaguar Set to Reveal 2nd SUV

New Jaguar E-Pace to make world premiere on July 13 in London.

by on Jun.21, 2017

The new Jaguar E-Pace will compete with compact SUVs like the Audi Q3.

The compact performance utility vehicle will complement the bigger F-Pace which has already become the British marque’s best-seller since going on sale last year. Meanwhile, Jaguar is working up a third ute, the battery-powered I-Pace that is still more than a year from coming to market.

2018 Product News!

While Jaguar is saving a number of details for the London debut on July 13 it has already confirmed that the E-Pace will carry a base price of $38,600 – delivery fees – or about $3,000 less than the starting price for the 2017 F-Pace.

Genesis Hints at Future with Hydrogen-Hybrid GV80 SUV

Is this powertrain part of its future?

by on Apr.12, 2017

The Genesis GV80 Concept made its Tuesday debut at the NY Auto Show.

The challenge for a new automotive brand is to try to decide what you stand for and then get that message out to the public. In the case of Genesis, the new luxury marque does have the benefit of having a deep-pocket parent with plenty of design and engineering talent.

And that all comes together in the form of the GV80 Concept vehicle which made its debut at the New York International Auto Show Wednesday afternoon. While it’s being billed as nothing more than a show car, officials with the luxury arm of Hyundai Motor Co. said key design elements – as well as some of the GV80’s technology – will make it into production.

What a Conceptt!

The marque’s first crossover-utility vehicle, liberally borrowing from the concept, will roll into Genesis showrooms “in about two years,” said brand boss Manfred Fitzgerald. And the GV80’s distinctive, quad-slit headlamps “will become a signature for the Genesis brand,” carrying over to all future models.

Lincoln Wants Back In With Remake of Big Navigator

A long-awaited remake puts Lincoln's big SUV back in the game.

by on Apr.12, 2017

With the 2018 Lincoln Navigator, the big ute gets its first full makeover in a decade.

The company that invented the full-size luxury SUV has been little more than an also-ran in recent years, Ford Motor Co. long neglecting its big Lincoln Navigator – until now, anyway.

This week’s New York International Auto Show will see the debut of a flood of new sport- and crossover-utility vehicles, but perhaps none has been awaited with more interest than the 2018 Navigator which is finally getting the complete makeover it has long and desperately needed.

Rolls-Royce Offers 1st Good Look at Upcoming SUV

Project Cullinan “takes next step.”

by on Dec.01, 2016

The Rolls-Royce SUV mule will be getting a serious workout in the months to come.

Rolls-Royce is plowing plans to put its first SUV on the road – and its giving us a first look at the vehicle it’s developing as part of what it has dubbed Project Cullinan.

The British ultra-luxury brand is just one of the latest manufacturers to adapt to shifting market trends, echoing rival Bentley which launched its own Bentayga sport-utility vehicle earlier this year. With the exception of Ferrari, in fact, all major super-premium brands – including such names as Aston Martin and Lamborghini – intend to roll out utes of their own.

“This is an incredibly exciting moment in the development of Project Cullinan both for Rolls-Royce and for the patrons of luxury that follow us around the world,” said Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, in a statement accompanying these two images.

Forget Sports Cars, SUVs Set to Dominate Super-Premium Luxury Market

Utility vehicles likely to be best-sellers for brands like Aston Martin, Bentley, Lamborghini, even Rolls-Royce.

by on Aug.24, 2016

Lamborghini first revealed the Urus SUV concept at the 2012 Beijing Motor Show.

They’re both known for their high-performance sports cars, but when Aston Martin and Lamborghini launch two of their most critical models ever, both in 2019, the focus of the two brands will shift to sport-utility vehicles.

If all goes according to plan, those two models, the Aston Martin DBX and the production version of the Lamborghini Urus concept, will generate at least 50% or more of their sales. But that’s far from precedent setting. Best known for sports cars like the 911 and the Boxster, it’s the Cayenne and Macan SUVs that already generate the biggest sales numbers for Porsche.

Insight!

Super-premium utility vehicles are “going to be the hottest segment in the luxury market,” said Simon Sproule, the chief marketing officer for Aston. “As with the mainstream market, that’s what people want to drive.”
