First Drive: 2018 Kia Stinger GT

Sometimes it feels good to get stung.

by on Oct.09, 2017

The 2018 Kia Stinger GT features a twin-turbo 3.3-liter V-6 pushing the rear or all four wheels.

It was a formidable line-up baking there in the Mojave Desert sun: an assortment of Audis, BMWs, Lexus (Lexii?) and, perhaps most intimidating of all, a Porsche Panamera. But we hadn’t driven out to the California badlands for a shoot-out among traditional luxury brands. Across the tarmac, poised like the new sheriff in town: a line-up of new Kia Stinger GTs sat waiting to challenge the established order.

Kia? Really? Yep, really. The brand, long known for its no-frills subcompacts, has made some surprising strides in recent years with larger, more lavish offerings like the Optima sedan and Sorrento SUV. It’s even tried its hand in the luxury market with the full-size K900 sedan. Kia has already kicked sand in the faces of some of the industry’s most exclusive brands, handily topping the charts in a series of recent quality and customer satisfaction surveys.

Reviews You Can Trust!

And if any new model reveals what Kia’s plans for the future might be, it is certainly the new Stinger. First shown in concept form at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the five-door hatchback will be rolling into U.S. showrooms in the coming weeks with only the most modest of changes.

by on Oct.02, 2017

Kia's latest generation of the Rio reveals how far the automaker's come since arriving in the U.S. more than two decades ago.

We all have stages of life that we regret. Usually, most of us face up to that at a high school reunion, when embarrassing stories reappear to remind us of how far we’ve come. It’s no different for automakers. Some won’t admit those little embarrassments, but others will.

“We’re very honest about our past,” said James Bell, director of communications for Kia Motors America. “This company recognizes that at one point, a little less of a reputation was something that was deserved. But we’re moving past that.”

by on Sep.12, 2017

Kia's Proceed concept could re-ignite a fervor for station wagons — if it comes to the United States.

Kia is Proceed-ing with plans to get big into the station wagon segment — whoops, make that “extended hatch” segment with the debut of the new Proceed model at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Whether you prefer that term, or some other euphemism, like “shooting brake,” “carryall,” “depot car,” or even “estate car,” the new model has been generating plenty of buzz since the Korean carmaker released the first teaser images of the Proceed last week.

Industry News!

As with the new Stinger, the Kia Proceed is the sort of vehicle that will further enhance the reputation for cutting-edge styling that has been achieved under the guidance of Peter Schreyer, the one-time Audi styling chief, who has worked magic for a brand one known for bland and forgettable econoboxes.
