Hyundai Planning to Add, Update 8 CUVs by 2020

Kona model will kick off ute assault.

The Hyundai Kona made its official public debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Struggling to adapt to rapid changes in the U.S. new vehicle market, Hyundai plans to introduce eight all-new or significantly updated crossover-utility vehicles by 2020, the automaker revealed during a media briefing on Wednesday morning.

The wave of new models will range from a sub-compact, or A-segment ute up to a three-row, eight-passenger offering. The Hyundai Kona, set to be unveiled at the upcoming Los Angeles Motor Show, will become the first of the new products to go on sale.

“CUVs are what’s really driving growth in the U.S. market,” said Mike O’Brien, Hyundai Motor America’s vice president of corporate planning, and the lack of a full range of utility vehicles is a key reason why analysts say Hyundai has lost momentum over the last several years after a decade of rapid growth.

Hyundai May Build New Pickup, SUV in U.S.

Move would require expansion of Alabama plant.

Hyundai won raves for the Santa Cruz concept, a car-based pickup, which it sorely needs in its U.S. line-up.

Slow to adapt to the shift from passenger cars to light trucks, Hyundai Motor Co. is racing to add new SUVs, as well as its first pickup truck, to its line-up, and it is giving serious consideration to producing them in its Alabama assembly plant.

Hyundai was one of the fastest-growing brands coming out of the American economic recession, but its growth has stalled over the last few years, analysts largely pointing to the Korean carmaker’s limited SUV options — the Santa Fe and the Tucson – at a time when light trucks account for nearly two-thirds of the American automotive market.

Hyundai officials have confirmed plans to expand the mix, with at least one, and likely two more SUVs coming. A version of the wildly popular Santa Cruz pickup is also nearing production and expected to be launched as early as the 2019 model-year.

Management Shake-up as Hyundai Ousts U.S. CEO Zuchowski

Dave Zuchowski, the widely respected CEO of Hyundai Motor America has been summarily ousted by the company’s Korean headquarters.

The departure of the long-time Hyundai executive, who was named CEO in 2013, comes at a time when Hyundai has lost some of its momentum in the American market – though various industry observers said they question how much blame can be ascribed to Zuchowski considering he has long been pressing to flesh out Hyundai’s slim line-up of light trucks at a time they are gaining momentum while traditional passenger cars falter.

Hyundai representatives had no immediate comment on the news beyond the announcement that Jerry Flannery, currently HMA’s executive vice president and general counsel, will step in, at least temporarily, as Zuchowski’s replacement.

Strike Could Spell Problems for Hyundai

First full strike in 12 years could hit American operations.

Hyundai Motor Co. is facing a crippling, all-out strike for the first time in a dozen years, and the walkout at the maker’s Korean plants could soon impact its U.S. operations.

Korean labor unions have a history of militant action but had settled into an uneasy peace with Hyundai and rival automakers in recent years, at worst staging limited actions at select plants in order to win demands.  The latest action follows a vote by workers last month that rejected Hyundai’s latest wage package.

While the world’s fifth-largest automaker – which also operates the Kia brand – has expanded its global production base in recent years, Hyundai still produces about 40% of its new cars and light trucks in South Korea, and many of those vehicles are earmarked for the U.S., as well as Europe, the Middle East and other parts of Asia.

Hyundai makes a number of changes to the 2017 Santa Fe line, including a new front fascia with a brushed-look grille and new headlamps.

By the millions, American motorists are migrating from conventional passenger cars to sport-utility vehicles and more car-like crossover models. And manufacturers are responding with a flood of new offerings.

So, it’s a challenge to keep existing models fresh and competitive – something Hyundai hopes to handle with the debut of updated versions of two key entries at the Chicago Auto Show. It boasts that the 2017 Santa Fe and smaller Santa Fe Sport models get not only a mid-cycle facelift but enhanced safety, convenience and connectivity features.

Hyundai is so upbeat about the prospects for the 2017 updates it is planning to boost capacity, notably adding production of the Santa Fe Sport at its manufacturing plant in Montgomery, Alabama. But it is also readying a slew of new utility vehicles to take advantage of shifting market trends.

Hyundai Set to Launch 1st Pickup, Flood of New SUVs

Official Santa Cruz announcement to come by April.

Hyundai won raves for the Santa Cruz concept, a car-based pickup unveiled in early 2015.

In a market increasingly dominated by pickups and utility vehicles, Hyundai is “out of whack,” with a car-dominated model mix, but that’s about to change, says the company’s top U.S. executive.

Sometime before April, the Korean carmaker is formally planning to announce it will build the well-received Santa Cruz pickup that debuted in concept form at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show. But it will be just one in a flurry of new crossover-based models for both the mainstream Hyundai and new Genesis luxury brands, officials have confirmed.

“We’re out of whack, a fish swimming upstream,” in the current environment, said Hyundai Motor America CEO Dave Zuchowski, noting that while truck models currently account for 58% of the U.S. vehicle market, they make up barely 27% of Hyundai’s American volume.

And without getting more in line with market trends, Hyundai is beginning to see its steady growth begin to sputter, officials acknowledged during a media preview of the new Elantra sedan in San Diego.

Hyundai Sketches Tease New Tucson

Korean carmaker will use Geneva as backdrop for ute’s unveiling.

Hyundai is giving everyone an early look the new Tucson ahead of its debut in Geneva.

Hyundai will roll out a major redesign of its popular Tucson sport-utility vehicle at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show. But it’s already offering a hint of what’s to come thanks to a sketch and a video that focuses in on the development process.

The updated Tucson will pick up on some of the latest Hyundai design cues, such as the signature hexagonal grille, refined by recent offering such as the second-generation Genesis luxury sedan.

Hyundai Expands Santa Fe Family

It’s a family affair.

The 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe is a 3-row spinoff of the Santa Fe Sport that went on sale earlier this year.

In the car business, naming vehicles is an art all to itself. But now Hyundai is following a practice pioneered by Ford with its wide range of “F-Series” pickups, and more recently, Toyota with its Prius “family.  Now, the Korean carmaker will go the same route, utilizing the Santa Fe name for two distinctly different vehicles.

Hyundai showed off the production version of the latest model to wear the Santa Fe badge, a new three-row six (or seven) seat crossover, at the 2012 LA Auto Show. A two-row, five-seater dubbed the Santa Fe Sport, has been on sale since August.

John Krafcik, the Hyundai of America of chief executive officer once oversaw Ford F-Series engineering. Ford has traditionally treated all the various full-size pickups – from single-row, light-duty models to heavy-duty crew-cab trucks with extended beds – as a single nameplate. The all-encompassing F-Series has been America’s best-selling vehicle for more than 30 years.

First Look: 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

Reveals new “Storm Edge” design theme.

Hyundai will introduce the new 2013 Santa Fe in New York next month.

It was a dark and stormy design…

Well, not quite, but this somewhat shadowed teaser image from Hyundai provides a first look at the maker’s next-generation Santa Fe crossover.  The 2013 remake introduces what the maker has dubbed “Storm Edge,” an update of its well-regarded Fluidic Sculpture design language.

The two renderings come less than a month before Hyundai rolls out the 2013 Santa Fe at the upcoming New York International Auto Show.  The update of the CUV is an important and symbolic move for the Korean carmaker.  The original Santa Fe marked the transformation of the Hyundai brand from one focusing on cheap and boring products into a maker of stylish, fun-to-drive – if still affordable – automobiles.

The most notable change comes with an updated take on the familiar Hyundai six-sided grille.  It now features flatter, but thicker, cross slats.  The front look borrows heavily from the maker’s new Azera, especially when it comes to the wraparound headlamps, which feature LED accents around the main projector bulbs.
