Hyundai Sends Nexo Ute on 118-Mile Autonomous Trek

Automaker sent three crossovers to Pyeongchang from Seoul.

Three Hyundai Nexo FCVs drove autonomously from Seoul to Pyeongchang, South Korea.

As thousands of athletes descend on Pyeongchang, South Korea for the Winter Olympics this week, Hyundai engaged in its own special event as three of is fuel-cell powered Nexo concept crossovers headed to the Olympic city.

Three fuel cell vehicles making the nearly 120-mile trek from Seoul to Pyeongchang isn’t all that impressive except they were using Level 4 autonomous technology to make the trip on their own: a first for FCVs.

The vehicles used for the demonstration are “futuristic vehicles” that closely represent Hyundai’s three visions for future mobility: connected mobility; freedom in mobility; and clean mobility, the automaker noted. (more…)

Hyundai Nexo Will Deliver 370 Miles on Tank of Hydrogen

Hyundai introduced the new Nexo fuel-cell electric with Aurora CEO Chris Urmson, left, and Ki Sang-Lee, Hyundai vice president.

Five years after launching its first hydrogen car, Hyundai is ready to take things a big step forward, unveiling the new Nexo fuel-cell vehicle at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The Nexo is the latest in the wave of “eco” vehicles from the South Korean carmaker, a list that will include a mix of 18 hybrids, plug-ins, pure battery-electric vehicles and hydrogen cars by 2025. Sibling brand Kia will share the underlying fuel-cell system for a new model of its own before the end of the decade.

Following up on the 2013 debut of the original Hyundai Tucson FCV, “we’re ready to showcase how far our fuel-cell technology has come,” said Hyundai Senior Vice President Ki Sang-Lee said during a roll-out of the Nexo at CES. (more…)
