Hyundai Planning to Add, Update 8 CUVs by 2020

Kona model will kick off ute assault.

by on Nov.15, 2017

The Hyundai Kona made its official public debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Struggling to adapt to rapid changes in the U.S. new vehicle market, Hyundai plans to introduce eight all-new or significantly updated crossover-utility vehicles by 2020, the automaker revealed during a media briefing on Wednesday morning.

The wave of new models will range from a sub-compact, or A-segment ute up to a three-row, eight-passenger offering. The Hyundai Kona, set to be unveiled at the upcoming Los Angeles Motor Show, will become the first of the new products to go on sale.

“CUVs are what’s really driving growth in the U.S. market,” said Mike O’Brien, Hyundai Motor America’s vice president of corporate planning, and the lack of a full range of utility vehicles is a key reason why analysts say Hyundai has lost momentum over the last several years after a decade of rapid growth.

Hyundai May Build New Pickup, SUV in U.S.

Move would require expansion of Alabama plant.

by on Nov.10, 2017

Hyundai won raves for the Santa Cruz concept, a car-based pickup, which it sorely needs in its U.S. line-up.

Slow to adapt to the shift from passenger cars to light trucks, Hyundai Motor Co. is racing to add new SUVs, as well as its first pickup truck, to its line-up, and it is giving serious consideration to producing them in its Alabama assembly plant.

Hyundai was one of the fastest-growing brands coming out of the American economic recession, but its growth has stalled over the last few years, analysts largely pointing to the Korean carmaker’s limited SUV options — the Santa Fe and the Tucson – at a time when light trucks account for nearly two-thirds of the American automotive market.

Product News!

Hyundai officials have confirmed plans to expand the mix, with at least one, and likely two more SUVs coming. A version of the wildly popular Santa Cruz pickup is also nearing production and expected to be launched as early as the 2019 model-year.

Kia Gets Stonic With its New, Subcompact Crossover

Korean carmaker’s answer to Hyundai Kona set for sale in late 2017.

by on Jun.07, 2017

Kia sketches out plans for its entry into the subcompact SUV segment with new Stonic.

Even before we had a chance to check out the three renderings of Kia’s new subcompact crossover, the Korean carmaker’s press release got our minds working overtime. What exactly is a “Stonic”? What could it be trying to convey with that curious name – and how might it resonate with consumers.

“Strong” and “Supersonic,” perhaps, or “Speedy” and “Bionic”? Well, we were getting warm. The name actually blends the words “Speedy” and “Tonic,” it turns out. And, if nothing else, we’re betting Kia’s legal team likes it because it’s likely not going to conflict with any existing trademarks anywhere in the world.

The Kia Stonic appears to be the smaller Korean carmaker’s answer to bigger sibling Hyundai’s new Kona – of which we got a pair of teaser images just a few days ago. Both models are believed to share the same, underlying platform as the redesigned Hyundai Accent coming out later this year.

Hyundai Kona: First Look at New Subcompact SUV

Filling a gap in a fast-growing segment.

by on Jun.05, 2017

Hyundai teases the new 2018 Kona SUV.

Hyundai is set to fill an increasingly big gap in its small vehicle line-up with the upcoming launch of the Kona SUV.

With only two sport-utility vehicles in its line-up right now, the Korean carmaker has been leaving lots of potential business on the table for competitors with broader line-ups. The gap has been particularly noticeable at the low end where vehicles like the Nissan Juke and Honda HR-V have been building momentum in the U.S. and other markets.

Breaking News!

Hyundai officials have been hinting for several years about plans to close the gap and while several new SUV models may follow, the roll-out is set to begin early in the 2018 model-year with the arrival of the Kona. The South Korean maker is giving us a first good look at what’s coming with some teaser images that we’ve enhanced ever so slightly to bring more details out of the shadows.
