The 2019 GMC Sierra loses as much as 360 pounds compared to the outgoing pickup.

It’s traditionally been easy to dismiss the GMC Sierra as little more than a glorified Chevrolet Silverado, but with today’s unveiling of the 2019 Sierra it seems the GMC truck is going to be due a lot more respect.

True, it shares the same underlying platform and basic dimensions of the more down-market Chevy, but the 2019 truck is no clone, claiming a variety of first-ever innovations that include a carbon fiber bed, a six-way tailgate, a swiveling backup-camera mirror and a large head-up display.

What could have been a great week for the Chevy Silverado now has an ominous omen hanging over it.

Just days before it learns whether its 2014 Chevrolet Silverado pickup wins honors as the North American Truck of the Year, General Motors has announced it is recalling 370,000 full-size trucks due to a potential fire hazard.

The safety action covers both the new Chevy Silverado and the near-twin GMC Sierra model, both receiving widespread kudos since being completely redesigned for the 2014 model-year. But the recall could be just one of the problems the new GM pickups will be facing in the coming days.

According to GM, the recall is required to reprogram engine control software to reduce the risk of overheating exhaust components and eliminate the risk of an engine compartment fire. The Detroit maker reports that there have been eight fires resulting from the problem, “three of which were on customer owned vehicles.”


Ford Blows Past Last Year’s Truck Sales

Ford has already sold more F-Series trucks than it did all of 2012.

New vehicle sales have been humming along this year, in large part due to the renewed popularity of full-size pickups. Nowhere has it been more evident than at Ford, which gets a reminder every 42 seconds.

The company announced today that it has already sold more F-Series trucks this year than it did last year with six weeks left to go. F-Series sales have now exceeded 645,316 trucks: one every 42 seconds, according to Ford.

“If our truck business continues at this rate through the end of the year, we will reach 60,000 F-Series sales for eight straight months, putting us on par with 2006, before the economic downturn,” said Erich Merkle, Ford sales analyst, in a release. (more…)

GM Truck Offensive Picks Up Momentum

The upcoming launch of the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon will highlight GM's new truck offensive.

General Motors plans to unveil  its new mid-sized pickup trucks during the press previews at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November – the new Chevy and GMC models part of a broad offensive the Detroit maker hopes will take advantage of the sudden surge in truck sales.

The introduction of the two midsize pickups will follow the launch of GM’s new Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size models, and target a segment of the market now dominated by the Japanese.

“We think we have a real opportunity with that truck,” said Chris Perry, marketing chief for the Chevrolet division, referring to the new Chevy Colorado pickup. The GMC model will be dubbed the Canyon.

Since GM killed off the old Colorado and Canyon models, Detroit makers have left the segment to the Japanese, with models like the Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier and the Honda Ridgeline. And with sales on the decline, it has been anything but certain whether the domestics would try a comeback.

GM's 2014 pickups could add a billion dollars to its bottom line, according to one forecast.

As it sells off its old full-sized pickups while ramping up production of two all-new models, things are going markedly better than forecast, according to several top General Motors executives, with sales exceeding expectations and the old truck commanding a higher price than planned.

The overall U.S. market has been rebounding faster than almost anyone has expected this year, with sales now forecast to reach or exceed 15.5 million for all of 2013, about 1 million more than last year. And full-size pickups have been leading the charge, the segment up more than 20% for the past seven months.

But GM pickup sales surged a whopping 44% in July compared to year-earlier numbers, with the outgoing 2013 model accounting for 85% of total volume for the month.

“It’s a nice transition,” said Chris Perry, general marketing manager for the Chevrolet Division which markets the most popular of GM’s two full-sized trucks, the Silverado. The other model is the GMC Sierra.

First Drive: 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

The exterior changes to the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado have largely been aimed at improving aerodynamics.

According to some prognosticators, millions of Americans were supposed to be trading in on hybrids, plug-ins and battery cars this year.  The V-8 engine and the full-size pickup were both supposed to be relegated to the automotive scrap heap.

It hasn’t worked out quite as expected.  Battery car sales have barely registered, and though demand for V-8s has certainly fallen, pickups have been rapidly regaining momentum. We’re expecting sales will grow even more substantially in the months ahead as buyers get a look at the new 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500.

While Chevy’s full-size truck is far from perfect, it is arguably the best pickup General Motors has ever built. The 2014 Silverado does everything you’d expect a truck to do such as pull a trailer, carry a load or traverse rugged trails. But it’s more than just a solid work truck.  The new Chevy Silverado’s cabin is both unexpectedly quiet nicely furnished, while the pickup delivers a firm, poised ride more similar to that of a large, expensive sedan than the classic, rough-riding truck.


GM Will Launch New Midsize Pickups for 2015

General Motors is counting down for the launch of two all-new midsize pickups which will likely reach showrooms in time for the 2015 model-year.

GM hopes to buck the industry trend that has seen a sharp decline in demand for small trucks in recent years – and led both Chrysler and Ford to abandon the once lucrative market segment. The maker intends to target buyers who want something sportier and more fuel-efficient than current full-size offerings like the Chevrolet Silverado, said Mark Reuss, president of GM’s North American operations.

But Reuss also promised that the smaller pickups will maintain most of the capabilities of their full-size siblings.

It remains to be seen what names the two new models will get.  There’s a good chance GM planners will opt for something entirely new rather than picking up the Chevrolet and GMC nameplates the maker stopped producing last year.

Pricing for the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado is unchanged from 2013.

Truck buyers in the market for a new Chevrolet Silverado or GMC Sierra got some good news today as General Motors it announced that base prices for the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks will remain unchanged from 2013.

In addition to the prices, the fuel-economy ratings and performance figures for truck siblings also stay the same. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for the new 2014 Silverado regular cab will start at $24,585, and pricing for the regular cab GMC Sierra starts at $25,085. Both include a $995 destination freight charge.

Nissan Planning New Titan for Likely 2015 Debut

More body styles, powertrain options aimed to enhance appeal.

The current Nissan Titan is a marginal player in the big pickup market.

One thing the Japanese have demonstrated, over and over again, is that they live by the old adage, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” And nowhere is that more apparent than in the full-size truck market.

Despite repeated attempts, Nissan and Toyota have failed to dislodge Detroit’s firm grip on the huge and highly profitable segment. But even as the bigger of the two makers gets ready to reveal an all-new version of the Tundra pickup during the 2013 Chicago Auto Show, Nissan officials are confirming that they’re working up a replacement for their own full-size offering, the Titan.
