Documents Reveal GM Waited Years on Another Recall

Maker finally recalled 330,000- vehicles for power steering issue.

GM failed to issue a recall for several years over a power steering motor problem on 2004-2007 Saturn Ions. It finally issued a recall March 31.

The hits keep coming for General Motors as it was revealed that the automaker waited for years to recall more than 330,000 Saturn Ions for a power steering issue.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released documents revealing that GM waited despite thousands of consumer complaints and more than 30,000 warranty repair claims.

In 2004-2007 Saturn Ions, the power steering could fail without warning. The driver could control the car, but it required more effort and the driver is taken by surprise resulting in a loss of control of the vehicle. (more…)

GM Recalls Another 1.3 Million Vehicles

Power steering issue prompts the latest action.

GM recalled 1.3 million vehicles today, including the 2009 Pontiac G6, for power steering issues.

The torrent of General Motors’ recalls continued today when the company announced it was recalling 1.3 million cars because they may experience a sudden loss of electric power steering.

The recall of GM products is becoming a regular occurrence and this action puts the automaker at more than 5 million vehicles recalled in March.

Last Friday, the maker added another 971,000 products covered by a deadly ignition switch problem as well as another 172,000 newer Chevrolet Cruze sedans and 490,000 full-size Chevy and GMC pickups and sport-utility vehicles. (more…)

GM Recalls Compacts to Fix Power Steering Loss

Safety Recall Covers 1.3 Million Chevrolet and Pontiac Models.

So far Toyota is not recalling the Corolla, which uses the same electric motor.

General Motors Company will conduct a safety recall of 1.3 million compact cars to replace a motor in the power steering system.

There have been ongoing complaints about the complete loss of power steering assist in Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G4, G5, and Pursuit cars.

There is also a stop sale on all current production Cobalt models until a new power steering motor is installed.

GM told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about the safety recall on Monday after concluding an investigation that began in 2009.

NHTSA opened an investigation January 27 into approximately 905,000 Cobalt models in the United States after receiving more than 1,100 complaints of loss of power steering assist, 14 crashes and one injury. All of these are now recalled.

The part is also, apparently shared with the Toyota Corolla, which is of course under pressure for its delays in safety recalls.Toyota subsequently said it is “still  studying” the issue.

The latest development shows automakers scrambling to announce recalls and extend service actions (sometimes called secret warranties because they weren’t announced), in the wake of the harsh criticism directed at NHTSA and Toyota for their handling of safety and quality matters on millions of vehicles.   (more…)
