GM Boosting Bolt EV Production as Demand Surges

CEO Barra asking Congress to expand electric-car tax credits.

There's significant room to expand Chevy Bolt EV production at GM's Orion Assembly Plant.

General Motors plans to expand production of its first long-range battery-car, the Chevrolet Bolt EV, CEO Mary Barra said during an energy conference in Houston.

The Bolt has experienced stronger than expected demand in recent months, some analysts suggesting that is the result of the slow ramp-up of production for Tesla’s own mainstream EV, the Model 3.

Demand has also been buoyed by $7,500 federal tax credits that bring the base price of the Bolt down below $30,000. But under the current rules, GM is expected to soon see the credits phase out, something that could cut into demand, leading Barra to say that, “We feel tax credits should be expanded so our customers continue to receive the benefits going forward.”

The Chevrolet Bolt will soon by joined by "at least" 20 more battery-electric vehicles from GM.

Despite a slow start for its Chevrolet Bolt EV, General Motors “believes in an all-electric future,” the maker’s global product development chief said Monday, announcing GM will back that up with the launch of 20 pure battery-electric vehicles, or BEVs, by 2023.

The Bolt, the automaker’s first long-range electric model, will be joined by two other BEVs within the next 18 months, GM also confirmed Monday. The largest of Detroit’s Big Three automakers also revealed a fuel-cell-powered heavy-duty truck concept dubbed SURUS, that could be used for a variety of purposes, such as a delivery vehicle or first-responder vehicle.

GM joins a growing list of manufacturers who have, in recent months, announced plans to greatly expand their range of battery and fuel-cell vehicles. Some, such as Volvo, intend to only offer electrified drivelines, others, such as Volkswagen, say they will have electrified options available on all future models. But while it has not set out a timeline, GM intends to go to 100% pure electric across the board, officials said.

The car GM is developing would yield more than twice the range of a Chevrolet Spark EV.

General Motors plans to more than double the range of the typical electric vehicle – while also sharply driving the cost, according to a senior official.

But with mounting concerns about the slow consumer response to the first wave of battery electric vehicles, Doug Parks, GM’s global product development chief, cautioned the Associated Press that it was not yet sure if or when such a vehicle – projected to cost just $30,000 – would ever go into production.

A vehicle delivering 200 mile range would come close to the range of the Tesla Model S, which is offered with a choice of several battery packs, including an extended-range version that can reach as much as 265 miles on a charge, according to the EPA.


Cadillac Reviving Converj Concept, Will Launch as ELR Battery Car

Shares plug-in hybrid technology with Chevrolet Volt.

Cadillac offers a hint of its luxury plug-in the ELR.

General Motors has apparently reversed course and now plans to add a second plug-in hybrid to its U.S. product line-up, this one targeting the luxury market where pricing could be less of a concern than it has become for the more mainstream Chevrolet Volt.

The new model, dubbed Cadillac ELR, is based on the wildly popular Caddy Converj, perhaps the biggest hit of the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.  Details including price and timing have not been released, though industry sources tell that the new model would likely be launched well before mid-decade and carry a sticker price pushing towards the high $40,000 mark – reflecting significant added content beyond what’s now offered in the plebian Chevy plug-in.

It’s not clear whether the ELR will add significantly to GM’s overall sales goals for its so-called Voltec plug-in hybrid technology or will simply take up some of the already-planned capacity that had until now been assigned to the Volt and a second gas-electric model, the Opel Ampera.  Together, they’re expected to generate 16,000 sales in 2011, with production rising to 40,000 next year.

According to a GM release, the Cadillac ELR will share the same extended-range electric vehicle driveline as Volt and Ampera.  That means that under all but the most demanding circumstances the wheels are turned solely by an electric motor.  Power initially comes from a T-shaped lithium-ion battery pack, but after the batteries are discharged the vehicle automatically switches to an onboard 4-cylinder gas engine.
