Ford Inks Three-Year Deal with Alibaba

Agreement opens another door to sell vehicles in China

In the event it wasn’t clear that Ford is serious about increasing its sales in China, it’s new partnership with Alibaba Group should clear up any confusion.

The new three-year agreement announced today with Alibaba, essentially China’s version of Amazon, may offer Ford an online outlet for its vehicles. The deal, which was reported to be in the works earlier this week by TheDetroitBureau.com. The deal came at the end trip by Ford Chairman Bill Ford Jr. and CEO Jim Hackett.

Last month, Ford committed to a more than $750 million tie-up with Anhui Zotye Automobile Co. to build electric vehicles in China. Earlier this week, Chairman Ford and Hackett announced in plans to bring 50 new vehicles to the Chinese market by 2025, including 15 EVs as well as building five new vehicles locally in that country. Ford’s July Sales Jump 15 Percent in China

Company's sales are up 6% through July.

Ford sales are up 6% in China in the first half of the year due to the popularity of its SUVs and crossovers, like the new Edge.

Ford and its joint ventures in China increased sales by 15% in July, giving the company a bit of good news after a spate of disappointing financial and sales reports from other parts of the globe, including key market in North America.

Year-to-date sales for Ford, Changan Ford and Jiangling Motor Corp. total 652,836 vehicles, up 6% compared with the same time last year.

July sales for CAF, Ford’s passenger car joint venture, increased 20% compared to July 2015. Year-to-date sales for CAF accelerated past the half million mark with 503,719 vehicles sold, up 11% compared with last year. (more…)

Ford, GM Implement Expansion Plans in China

Makers invest in plants despite slowing economy.

Shanghai GM invested more than $1 billion in a new plant in China's Hubei province and expanded other facilities in the country.

Despite the fact that China’s economic growth has slowed, General Motors and Ford Motor Co. continue pushing ahead with plans to expand their production footprint there.

Mark Fields, Ford’s chief executive officer, told analysts this week thatFord expects the Chinese economy to grow by 7% to 7.5%, which is ample enough to sustain an increase in sales of new vehicles. Ford expects sales to come in at between 24 million and 26 million units and the automaker, with its Chinese partner, is moving ahead with plans to open two new factories in China this year.

Ford plans to open both an assembly plant and an engine plant in China this year. Ford sales in China grew 19% in 2014 to 1.1 million units and helped maintain the profitability of Ford overall operations in the Asia Pacific region despite losses in other parts of the region. (more…)

GM, Ford Vehicle Sales Blazing in China

Makers posted record results for first six months.

With cars like the Focus selling well, Ford set a sales record for the first six months in China this year.

General Motors, Ford and their joint venture partners posted record sales in China for the first half of the 2014, capping off the period with a strong showing in June.

GM’s sales in China in the first six months increased 10.5% from last year’s previous record for the period to 1.73 million units. In June, GM’s sales increased 9.1%. Ford China reported a 35% increase for the first six months of 2014, selling 549,256 vehicles. Ford China’s June sales increased 17%, the automaker reported.

“GM has experienced growth in demand for our products across China this year, especially at the higher end of our lineup and in the SUV/MPV segment,” said Matt Tsien, GM executive vice president and president of GM China. “We anticipate sales remaining strong through the end of 2014, as more people – particularly outside China’s major cities – become first-time vehicle buyers.” (more…)
