Ford Signs on for New EV Venture in China

More makers scrambling to partner up as China ups EV pressure.

Even as President Donald Trump landed in Beijing to talk about North Korea and other key issues such as trade, Ford Motor Co. announced it reached agreement with a Chinese partner to build a new line of electric vehicles for the burgeoning Chinese car market.

The new agreement with the Chinese company Zotye established a new venture called Zotye Ford Automobile Co. Ltd., a 50:50 joint venture that will offer affordable all-electric vehicles for consumers in China under a new indigenous brand.

China has long pressed western carmakers to establish new brands in China. General Motors created the Baojun brand in 2010 specifically for the Chinese market. Ford, however, has held off until now.  (more…)

GM, Ford Sales in China Move in Opposite Directions

GM sales hit record highs in August.

Ford's overall sales fell in August, the EcoSport posted an increase, as did the Lincoln brand.

General Motors set a new record for sales in China during August, but Ford Motor Co. reported that the company’s sales declined 1% last month.

According to Ford, China vehicle sales came in at 97,863 units, down 1% year over year versus a decrease of 7% in July. Through the first eight months of 2017, Ford’s sales in China have dropped 6% year over year, compared with a rise of 6% year ago

One bright spot for Ford were sales of the luxury Lincoln brand, which topped 5,000 units in August. It was the first time Lincoln sales surpassed 5,000 unit. (more…)

Ford Signs Deal to Jointly Develop EVs in China

Plan calls for new 50/50 joint venture.

Looking to take advantage of the fastest growing market in the world for electric vehicles, Ford Motor Co. inked a development deal with Anhui Zotye Automobile Co. Ltd., a maker of zero-emission all-electric vehicles in China.

The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding “explore the creation of a joint venture” for the development, production, marketing and servicing of battery-electric passenger vehicles in China.

Automaker selling U.S.-built vehicles in China for first time.

Pickups are now the rage in China, and Ford is taking advantage of that demand by shipping Detroit-made F-150 Raptors to the country.

Amid the growing controversy over the United States trade agreements with other countries around the world, Ford Motor Co. has begun shipping pickups built the company’s storied Rouge manufacturing complex just outside Detroit to China.

However, these aren’t just any trucks.

Ford is shipping its all-new 2017 F-150 Raptor – a high-performance off-road pickup truck – to customers in China, who have said they wanted the vehicle. GM Sales in China Jump in April as Ford Falls

SUVs, MPVs, luxury vehicles still drawing buyers.

GM Executive Vice President and GM China President Matt Tsien said GM was selling SUVs and MPVs in big numbers in China in April.

General Motors and its Chinese partners said its sales increased 7.5% during April from the same month last year, while Ford Motor Co. reported an 11% decline for the same period.

GM said the company’s sales increase was focused on new segments and sport utility vehicles, which were up 107% from the same period a year earlier, while Cadillac luxury vehicle sales increased 13% in April from the previous year.

So far, in the first four months of 2016, GM and its joint ventures’ deliveries increased 1.7% year over year to a record 1,241,631 units. (more…)

Ford Focus Gains Traction in China, But 191K Recalled Due Fire Risk

Ford is recalling more than 191,000 Focuses in China due to a fuel line leak that could lead to a fire.

Despite being late to the sales party in China, Ford has been making up for lost time, especially this year as the company – led by the Focus – is expected to sell more than 1 million vehicles.

The automaker, which earlier this year claimed the Focus was the best-selling nameplate in the world, saw its August sales rise 9% with the Focus being the catalyst for that.

Ford, GM Continue Torrid Sales Pace in China

Makers set May record; Ford expects to hit 1 million units in 2014.

With cars like the Focus selling well, Ford expects to surpass 1 million in sales in China this year.

General Motors and Ford continue to roll up big sales totals in China, setting sales records during May.

Ford China sales grew 32% in May with 93,323 and Ford now expects to sell more than 1 million vehicles in China for the first time ever during 2014. Year-to-date sales were up 39%, with 461,473 wholesales sold compared to 332,308 wholesales sold in the first five months of 2013, Ford said.
