GM Puts Third Shift Back in Place in Spring Hill Plant

New shift will add 700 jobs in September.

GM is adding 700 jobs at its Spring Hill, Tennessee plant to build more Cadillac XT5 and GMC Acadia crossovers.

The on-again, off-again third shift at General Motors plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee, is on again, this time producing more crossovers as well as an Acadia vehicle for the company’s Australian brand, Holden.

The third shift is expected to begin production in September 2018 and add 700 new jobs. Industry wide, customers are increasingly purchasing crossovers, trucks and SUVs over sedans. Crossovers make up nearly half of the U.S. retail market (48.5%), according to GM.

Crossovers are booming for GM too as the GMC Acadia and Cadillac XT5 are posting strong results. Acadia retail sales were up more than 15% for the first quarter of 2018 on a year-over-year basis. Total Acadia sales were up 3%, marking the best first quarter ever for Acadia sales for both retail and total. (more…)

Crossover Sales Rage May be Hitting Peak

Analyst believes CUVs will top out at 40% of market.

The era of the crossover, or ute, is nearly over, according to one analyst; however, not everyone believes that prediction.

The end of the crossover boom could be approaching its peak even as car makers continue to push new models into showrooms, says a top automotive analyst.

As he presented the annual “Car Wars” study, John Murphy of Bank of America Merrill Lynch told the Automotive Press Association that the CUV market share now stands at 35%, but even as new, luxury models enter the segment 40% could be the limit.

October US Auto Sales Hit the Skids

Ford delays sales report due to fire at headquarters.

Jeep sales had been reliably strong for FCA during the past few years; however, they fell 7% in October.

The tempo of new vehicle sales slowed during October as every major automaker reported a drop during October.

Ford Motor Co., which also was expected to report a drop in sales, delayed the release of its October sales due to a fire in an electrical substation in the company’s headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. The fire, which happened yesterday, caused the evacuation and closure of the building.

The big surprise was a 10% drop in sales by FCA, which had posted a long string of sales increases, stretching back more than five years until it had to re-state its sales figures this summer under pressure from lawsuits by dealers and Securities and Exchange Commission. (more…)

Automotive Fuel Economy on the Rebound

Improvement comes despite rise in SUV, crossover sales.

The rising sales of SUVs and crossovers hasn't hindered the recent improvement in nation's average fuel economy.

With the marketshare of truck and utility vehicles fast approaching 60% and gasoline prices at their lowest level in a decade, the fuel economy of the vehicles American drive is still improving, according to a new survey by the University of Michigan.

The average fuel economy or window-sticker value of new vehicles sold in the U.S. in May 2016 was 25.4 mpg—up 0.2 mpg from the value for April 2016, the UM’s Transportation Research Institute reported.

“This improvement likely reflects the increased price of gasoline in May, and the consequent increased interest in more fuel-efficient vehicles by buyers of all vehicle classes,” Michael Sivak, UM researcher, noted.  (more…)

Automakers Struggle as Small Car Sales Slide

Desperate to reverse declining sales of some of its smallest passenger cars, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is trimming back the line-up of its compact Dodge Dart line and cutting as much as $1,600 off the sticker price of the three remaining models.

The Detroit maker isn’t alone. Across the industry, automakers are struggling to shore up demand for their sedans and coupes, especially the compact and smaller models that have been especially hard hit by the past year’s sharp dip in fuel prices.

Manufacturers are ramping up incentives, trimming model lines and, in some cases, cutting production or moving it offshore in a bid to reduce production costs.

“We are repositioning the Dart lineup to better align production and dealer inventory with consumer demand and preference,” Tim Kuniskis, FCA’s head of passenger car brands.


New Vehicle Sales Holding Strong in February

Despite the uncertainty that has rippled through the economy since the start of the year, new car sales have remained robust.

New-vehicle sales this month are expected to increase 8.1% from a year ago, according to a monthly sales forecast developed by J.D. Power and LMC Automotive.

GM Set to Add Array of New Utility Vehicles

This year’s slide in fuel prices has led to a big surge in sales of utility vehicles, whether conventional sport-utes or the newer, car-based crossovers. And General Motors plans to take advantage of that shift away from conventional sedans and coupes by adding an assortment of new utes to its line-up.

They range from downsized models, such as the soon-to-debut Buick Envision, to the big Cadillac XT5. And GM’s four U.S. brands plan to fill in as much white space as possible with either all-new utility vehicles or variants such as the GMC Acadia Denali.

Automakers Expected to Enjoy Robust September Sales

Holiday weekend helped push buyers to showrooms.

September auto sales are expected to be strong with a long holiday weekend luring new car buyers into dealer showrooms.

September is promising to be a very good month for the auto industry as a long holiday weekend at the beginning helped pump up sales, according to Santa Monica, California-based True Car Inc.

True Car, a consumer-oriented buying services, is predicting that the seasonally adjusted annualized rate or SAAR for total light vehicle sales should reach 17.7 million unit in September, which will be the best total in more than a decade, versus the very respectable total of 16.5 million units a year ago.

BMW Unveils New X1 Luxury Compact Crossover

The 2016 BMW X1 is taller, longer and wider than its predecessor making for a more comfortable ride.

Lost in the hubbub surrounding the collapse of Harald Krueger, BMW’s CEO, is the fact the Bavarian brand has its next-gen luxury compact crossover, the X1, ready for the market just as sales in the segment are taking off.

Lexus Tops Mercedes, BMW in July Luxury Battle

The 2015 Lexus NX 200h is helping the brand return to the top of the luxury sales charts.

Lexus beat out its archrivals Mercedes-Benz and BMW in sales during July, setting the stage for all out battle royale for leadership in luxury vehicle sales during the next five months.

The German brands have held the lead in luxury car sales since 2011 but Lexus, which has long been focused on the U.S. market, is making a determined challenge this year.
