Chevy Rolls Out Radical New Face for Camaro SS, New Turbo 1LE Models

Chevrolet adds mix of styling, performance enhancements.

by on Apr.09, 2018

The Camaro Turbo will get the high-performance Chevy 1LE package for the first time for 2019.

In a truck-centric market, it takes some work to keep sedans and coupes fresh, and nowhere is that more true than when it comes to high-performance muscle cars. With that in mind, Chevrolet is introducing a host of significant updates for the sixth-generation Camaro as it preps for the 2019 model-year.

That includes a distinctive front end for the SS model, as well as the first-ever pairing of Camaro’s optional turbo engine with the 1LE performance package. It joins existing V6, SS and ZL1 1LE combinations.

Performance News!

“The restyled 2019 Camaro reaches even higher with more of the design, technology and choices that customers want,” said Steve Majoros, Chevrolet’s marketing director for Cars and Crossovers. “It’s a performer with few competitors and a pillar of Chevrolet’s energized car lineup.”

Chevy Bets on Facelifts to Prop Up Three Passenger Cars

Malibu, Cruze and Spark get updates – but nada for slow-selling Sonic.

by on Apr.06, 2018

The 2019 Chevrolet Malibu in Premier and RS trims.

We’ve been hearing a lot lately about the slow death of the passenger car. Depending on which source you trust there could be any number of sedans, coupes, hatchbacks and sports cars vanishing over the next couple years as motorists by the millions migrate to SUVs, CUVs and other light trucks.

That includes the Chevrolet Sonic, from some of the latest reports. But GM North America President Alan Batey this week insisted that the automaker isn’t about to get out of the passenger car game and, as if to ensure we take him seriously, Chevrolet has revealed the updates it plans for three key models: the Malibu, Spark and Cruze – though the Sonic is notably absent.

2019 Model News!

“We are committed to offering consumers a full lineup of products with fresh designs, new technologies and efficient powertrain options,” said Brian Sweeney, U.S. vice president of Chevrolet. “The investments we have made in Spark, Cruze and Malibu will help position the brand for success in competitive segments that still make up a significant part of the total industry.”

3 Familiar Models May Vanish as Sales Shift to SUVs

Ford Taurus exiting for a second time, along with Fiesta and Chevy Sonic.

by on Apr.05, 2018

The Taurus is one of two Ford models that are expected to be dropped over the next few years.

March saw an even bigger surge in demand for SUVs, CUVs and other light trucks but, according to industry data, sales of sedans, coupes and hatchbacks continued to decline – an ongoing trend that is expected to lead to the demise of a number of once-popular passenger car models, including Ford’s big Taurus and subcompact Fiesta, as well as the little Chevrolet Sonic.

And even more passenger car models could be on the way out, according to industry sources, even as manufacturers move to expand their light truck portfolios to take advantage of one of the biggest market shifts in decades.

Product News!

“I think we’re going to see some contraction in passenger car nameplates,” said Stephanie Brinley, principle automotive analyst at IHS Automotive. “That’s not to say they’ll go away. Some people still like them….but there’ll be some rationalization over time.”

GM Boosting Bolt EV Production as Demand Surges

CEO Barra asking Congress to expand electric-car tax credits.

by on Mar.08, 2018

There's significant room to expand Chevy Bolt EV production at GM's Orion Assembly Plant.

General Motors plans to expand production of its first long-range battery-car, the Chevrolet Bolt EV, CEO Mary Barra said during an energy conference in Houston.

The Bolt has experienced stronger than expected demand in recent months, some analysts suggesting that is the result of the slow ramp-up of production for Tesla’s own mainstream EV, the Model 3.

Plug In Now!

Demand has also been buoyed by $7,500 federal tax credits that bring the base price of the Bolt down below $30,000. But under the current rules, GM is expected to soon see the credits phase out, something that could cut into demand, leading Barra to say that, “We feel tax credits should be expanded so our customers continue to receive the benefits going forward.”

Opinion: Mid-Engine Corvette: Too Little, Too Late?

Our veteran spy photographer says electric drive is the way to go.

by on Mar.02, 2018

Off to a rocky start? Our spy photographer thinks GM is on the wrong path with its mid-engine Vette.

Drop the mid-engine Corvette. Now.

It’s time for GM to stop its development of an icon vehicle, the 20?? mid-engine Corvette. Yes, the long, long overdeveloped car that has diverted GM’s innovational (?) attention for over 25 years. The car could be way behind what is happening in the 2-seat racing-type model of today.

Automotive Insight!

Huge changes are ongoing in the automobile business. We all see that. Car companies are formed and reformed, replaced, absorbed. New technologies are in huge development – autonomous cars and trucks are surely on the way. Electrics are moving – in some instances, shoved – on the scene, replacing the internal combustion engine.

GM’s Barra Optimistic NAFTA Will Survive; Won’t Pull Silverado Out of Mexico

"I'm very confident NAFTA will be modernized."

by on Jan.14, 2018

Renegotiating NAFTA will be "good for all three countries" in the deal, said GM CEO Barra.

Even as Fiat Chrysler gets ready to pull its full-size pickup truck production out of Mexico, General Motors CEO Mary Barra told reporters over the weekend that GM will continue building its own trucks South of the Border.

Barra, who had briefly served on President Donald Trump’s corporate advisory council until it was disbanded early last year, has been one of the business world’s more vocal supporters of the controversial Commander-in-Chief’s economic policies. And she again defended the administration’s efforts to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Behind the News!

“I’m very confident NAFTA will be modernized and it will be very good for all three countries,” Barra said during a scrum following the debut of the all-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado pickup.

Chevy Makes Big Bet on Smaller Equinox

Chevy formula means less is more.

by on Aug.25, 2017

Less weight, fewer cylinders, shorter body. It adds up to more from the '18 Chevy Equinox.

It seems like every time an automaker introduces a new version of an old car or truck they immediately begin by telling us just how much bigger it is than the outgoing model. That “midsize” Chevrolet Colorado? It’s nearly the same size as a full-size Silverado was a few generations back.

So, imagine our surprise when Chevy rolled out the new-for-2018 Equinox and began bragging how much smaller it is than the old crossover-utility vehicle: four inches shorter, 400 pounds lighter – and its biggest powertrain now has two fewer cylinders, as well.

Reviews You Can Trust!

Now, not everything has been downsized. The 2018 Chevrolet Equinox manages to deliver the same interior space for both passengers and cargo as before and that focus on lightweighting is one reason that the new model delivers up to more than 40 miles per gallon, depending upon which of the three engine options you choose.
