VW Begins Construction on New Chattanooga Plant

Facility will build new midsize SUV in 2016.

Construction began at Volkwagen's Chattanooga, Tennessee plant to handle the new midsize SUV coming there in 2016.

Better late than never. Volkswagen of America (VOA), which has seen its sales battered because of the lack of a competitive utility vehicle, has take a critical step toward fixing the problem by starting construction of its assembly plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Construction is underway at the VOA’s Chattanooga manufacturing facility in preparation for production of an all-new midsize SUV. The first phase of construction started in early January 2015 and will stretch out over the next two years, VOA officials said.

Volkswagen Grants Status to Second “Union”

Chattanooga plant gets new representation.

The American Council of Employees joined the UAW in gaining rights to represent workers at VW's plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Volkswagen AG is allowing an “anti-UAW” group to represent employees just like the UAW at its plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The new organization is called the American Council of Employees (ACE) and now has the same access rights to represent workers as the UAW.

The self-described alternative to the UAW claims it is a “truly local organization” with “no outside influence or political agenda.” The UAW attempted to organize the plant last year, but failed to garner enough votes to be the sole representative for all of the hourly workers at the facility. UAW Implements New Strategy for VW’s Chattanooga Plant

Local union structure may offset decades of defeat in southeast.

The UAW is creating a new local union to represent pro-union employees at Volkswagen's Chattanooga, Tennessee, plant.

The United Auto Workers union is down, but not out. After its recent efforts to organize Volkswagen’s assembly plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the union said it would not abandon the plant and it’s readying to make good on that promise by creating a new local union to represent pro-union workers at the plant.

The new local will not be the official representative of the workers at the plant until a majority of the workers inside the plant can vote again. The UAW suffered a demoralizing defeat when it lost a representation election supervised by the National Labor Relations Board by a 712 to 626 margin.

However, Dennis Williams, the UAW’s new president, said organizing the transplants remains one of the UAW top priorities. In addition, Berthold Huber, president of Germany’s IG Metal union, said in an interview during a recent visit to Detroit, the influential German Metalworkers was prepared to support the UAW’s drive in Chattanooga regardless of how long it takes. Corker Warns Against Silencing Politicians

NLRB investigating UAW claims about inappropriate influence.

U.S. Sen. Bob Corker said the NLRB could set a bad precedent if it finds in favor the UAW's objection to the election results at Volkwagen's Chattanooga, Tenn. plant.

While some feel that U.S. Sen. Bob Corker was less than truthful when he said that Volkswagen would build a new SUV at its plant in Tennessee if workers voted against UAW representation there, he may never have been more honest today.

“I probably am ‘Public Enemy No. 1′ to the UAW,” Corker (R-Tenn.) told reporters at a breakfast sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor this morning. “There’s no doubt there is some pent up anger towards me.”

VW Expects to Make Cross Blue Decision by Year’s End

Mid-size utility would be built at Chattanooga, Tenn. plant.

The fate of the VW Cross Blue will be known by the end of the year.

Even though there are only 40 days left on the calendar in 2013, Volkswagen of America (VOA) expects to have the final decision on whether to build the Cross Blue mid-sized utility vehicle by the end of the year the top VOA executive told reporters during a roundtable discussion.

“We said there will be a decision on the Cross Blue by the end of the back in January at the (North American International Auto Show) and there will be a decision by the end of the year,” said Jonathan browning, VOA chief executive officer.

Browning went on to explain that Cross Blue was something of a joint operation with Volkswagen AG’s far flung operations in China. Plans call for also building the Cross Blue somewhere in China as well as North America and the plans for the Chinese market also have to be finalized before VW to go ahead with an announcement. Volkswagen Talking with Union about Works Council in Tennessee

Group provides input into plant policy, but doesn’t negotiate contracts.

Workers at the new VW plant in Tennessee may get a voice in plant policies through a new "works council."

Despite intense pressure from the Tennessee’s Republican establishment to keep the union out Volkswagen has opened discussions with the United Auto Workers about establishing a German-style “works council” at its Tennessee assembly plant.

The talks with the UAW revolve around “the possibility of implementing an innovative model of employee representation for all employees,” according to the letter, which was released to the media in Chattanooga.

U.S. Production for Audi Unlikely Even as Volkswagen Builds a Plant Here

Audi, even though it’s optimistic about its future prospects, hasn’t made any decision yet on whether to build cars at the Volkswagen plant that’s under construction near Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Johan de Nysschen, president of Audi of America, told the Automotive Press Association in Detroit that Audi doesn’t have any plans for using the Chattanooga plant. Audi’s and Volkswagen’s platform strategies are moving in distinctly different directions, making it more difficult to share a plant, he noted.

“We’re not married to a common product with Volkswagen,” he said.

“We haven’t reached any kind of a decision on whether to build cars in (North America),” added de Nysschen. Any final case for a plant in the U.S. would have to consider whether there was enough volume to sustain production and whether it was possible to line up a cost-efficient supply base.

Despite some modest cuts, Audi isn’t about to abandon motorsports, particularly since the company has been well served in recent years by its strong showing at the 24 Hours of LeMans and at the endurance races at Sebring.

This already a tough year since the industry is in the midst of a historic transition, “The industry being redefined,” he said. It’s also shrinking, he said, and more contraction lies ahead.

The luxury segment has already shrunk by one third this year, de Nysschen said. (more…)
