Audi Out: Follows Growing Group of Automakers Abandoning Detroit Auto Show

NAIAS still studying possible date change to revive flagging fortunes.

by on May.11, 2018

Audi has traditionally used the NAIAS for major intros, like the Q8 Concept it debuted in 2017.

Already hit by key defections, the organizers of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit learned Thursday that Audi will also be a no-show in January 2019 – though the luxury arm of Volkswagen Group said it will “continue to evaluate” a return at a later date.

A once-regional event, the NAIAS became the most significant auto show in the U.S., and one of the world’s most widely watched, when it added the “International” designation in 1989. At its peak around the start of the new millennium, Detroit could count on virtually every manufacturer to participate, with some years seeing more than 70 new cars, trucks, concepts and crossovers debut.

Breaking News!

As the industry plunged into recession, things began to change. Some manufacturers, such as Nissan, pulled out temporarily, but others decided to abandon the Motor City event entirely. That included some of the most exclusive marques, like Ferrari, as well as mainstream and luxury brands like Mazda, which was a hold out this past January. Volvo had no corporate presence, though its local dealers did roll a few vehicles into Detroit’s Cobo Hall convention center. Now, it seems, the exodus is turning into a rout. Audi follows Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Porsche in planning to stay home next January. (more…)

Look for an array of coupes, concepts, crossovers and more.

by on Dec.18, 2017

Attendees at the Detroit Auto Show will get the first full look at BMW's new X2 M Sport model.

It’s hard to keep up with all the new stuff rolling out of the BMW product development center. Barely two months after filling the stage with an assortment of sedans, coupes, crossovers and concepts at the L.A. Auto Show, the Bavarian automaker says it will have some big news to come in Detroit, as well.

Look for two major announcements at the North American International Auto Show next month, starting with the global debut of the X2, BMW’s newest crossover. Also to debut: a mid-cycle update of the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports car.

Industry News!

“The BMW X2 represents an expression of modern and extrovert vehicle dynamics,” Adrian van Hooydonk, senior vice president, BMW Group Design, said in a statement, adding that the “standalone vehicle concept brings a new, fresh and exciting facet of the BMW to the compact segment.” (more…)

BMW Confirms 2-Series Coupe to Debut in Detroit

Will debut alongside new M3 and M4 models.

by on Dec.13, 2013

The new BMW 2-Series Coupe replaces the old 1-Series 2-door model.

We’ve had more than a month to pour over early images of the new BMW 2-Series Coupe but now, the German maker says, we’ve only got a few more weeks to wait for a chance to actually eyeball the new sheet metal with the downsized 2-door scheduled to make its formal debut at January’s North American International Auto Show.

It will make its appearance alongside the fourth-generation BMW M3 and the all-new M4 Coupe on the floor of the newly expanded Cobo Center on the Detroit riverfront.

Product News!

For those who haven’t followed BMW’s new nomenclature strategy, odd numbers will now be dedicated to sedans, even numbers to coupes.  In other words, the new 2-Series Coupe is the replacement for the old 1-Series 2-doors.

AWD Gave BMW Traction to Hit Sales Record

All-wheel to be offered on growing range of future products.

by on Jan.18, 2013

The arrival of the new 328i xDrive gave BMW traction to push past rival Mercedes last year.

If you’re hoping to sell a luxury car in the populous New York metropolitan these days, you better hope it has all-wheel drive.  Indeed, in a growing portion of the country, even in Sunbelt states, AWD has become a must.  And in snow country, dealers report a conventional, rear-drive model like the BMW 3-Series might sit for months on the lot unsold.

No wonder the Bavarian maker’s dealers were so anxious to get the new all-wheel version of the latest 3-Series, which finally reached U.S. showrooms last month, said Ian Robertson, the BMW AG board member in charge of global sales.

Exclusive!

“We had a seven-month backlog of orders for the 3-Series with all-wheel drive,” he said. “Those cars were delivered in December,” he said, noting BMW had delayed the introduction of the all-wheel-drive version of the 3-Series.

BMW Teases New M6 Gran Coupe

Plenty of power, plenty of space.

by on Dec.13, 2012

BMW will join the fray in Detroit to formally introduce the new M6 Gran Coupe.

BMW has been signaling for some time plans to add an M version of the well-reviewed new 6-Series Gran Coupe. And it’s giving us a first look ahead of the new models debut at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show.

The M6 Grand Coupe will fill one of the few blank spaces left in the Bavarian maker’s performance line-up. Of all its wide range of offerings, BMW has said it has no intention of adding an M7 – instead turning to Alpina for a performance version of its flagship sedan.

News You Can Use!

The new M6 Gran Coupe shares powertrains with the M5 and M6 models, drawing power from a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 producing a neck-snapping 560 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque – which hits its peak at just 1,500 RPM, BMW notes.  That’s enough to launch the 4-door variant of the 6-Series coupe from 0 to 60 in just 4.1 seconds – on the way to a limited top speed of 155 mph.

BMW Confirms M6 Gran Coupe – Shows First Images

Formal debut scheduled for Detroit.

by on Nov.12, 2012

Some Photoshop tweaking reveals a bit more detail than BMW intended with this first teaser of the M6 Gran Coupe.

There was a time when only a select group of BMW models wore the vaunted M badge.  But with plenty of buyers ready to fork over tens of thousands of dollars more for the added power and prestige it was little more than a matter of time before we expected to see the new 6-Series Gran Coupe get the upgrade – as BMW North America CEO Ludwig Willisch all but confirmed in an interview with TheDetroitBureau.com earlier this year.

The wait is almost over. The latest M-Series model will officially make its debut at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show in January. And with an assortment of spy shots leaking out, BMW has decided to release a teaser image of its own of the M6 Gran Coupe.

Your Automotive Source!

The pics leave plenty to the imagination, as does the corporate press release.  BMW wants to ensure it can draw the media hordes to its booth at Cobo Center in barely two months time. But among the things we have discovered is that the M6 Gran Coupe will deliver a full 560 horsepower, or 115 more than the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 found in the 2013 BMW 650i Gran Coupe.
