Bloodhound Sniffs Victory as it Preps for 1,000 MPH Run

First test “a proper workout,” but the tough part is yet to come.

by on Oct.31, 2017

At 210 mph, the Bloodhound SSC was just warming up. It is designed to top 1,000 mph.

At just 210 mph it wasn’t much of a run for either Andy Green or the Bloodhound. But the first test drive of the jet-powered car was a clear sign that everything is coming together for what will a race for the record books.

This month marks the 20th anniversary of Green’s first entry into the Guinness Book. On October 15, 1997, he became the first human to blast through the sound barrier in an earlier jet car, the ThrustSSC, reaching 714.144 miles per hour. Now, the 55-year-old Green is out to boost that number by more than 40 percent.

Setting Records!

It has been 10 years since the Bloodhound Supersonic Car, or SSC, project was first conceived. But it only this month made its first test run at Cornwall Airport Newquay, Green assessing the event as “a proper workout for the vehicle.”

Forget the Sound Barrier, Bloodhound SSC is Aiming at 1,000 MPH

Jet/rocket package will produce the power of 180 Formula One racers.

A rendering shows the Bloodhound SSC as it races from 0 to 1,000 mph in just 42 seconds.

When RAF fighter pilot Andy Green hits the “start” button on the new Bloodhound SSC, he’ll fire up a 550-horsepower V-8 borrowed from the Jaguar F-Type sports car. But it will take a lot more than that to get the Bloodhound moving.

The big V-8 is simply there to pump fuel into the 42-foot-long, pencil-shaped Bloodhound’s EJ200 jet engine. When Green opens the throttle up, he will quickly be thrust deep into his cushioned seat as the jet, developed for the Eurofighter, quickly hits about 300 mph. But at that point, it’s only warming up.

A Real Blast!

At that point, a cluster of hybrid solid/liquid rockets will ignite, and if all goes according to plan, Andy Green will soon be moving at 1,000 miles per hour, or nearly a third faster than the land speed record he set in 1997, when he piloted the Thrust SSC to 763 mph, becoming the first man to ever drive through the sound barrier.

Jaguar Reveals New “Instinctive” AWD F-Type R Coupe

LA Auto Show debut to feature land speed record holder Andy Green.

by on Nov.06, 2014

Jaguar's new F-Type R Coupe with "instinctive" AWD is shown preparing for a run in South Africa.

Jaguar is punching up the performance quotient of its popular F-Type Coupe with an R edition that helps put all its power to the pavement with a new “instinctive” all-wheel-drive system.

To get the word out about the system, meanwhile, the automaker is partnering up with Bloodhound SSC, a British team setting out for a world land speed record in excess of 1,000 mph.

Gain Traction!

The new F-Type R Coupe AWD system is one of a number of performance enhancements that Jaguar will reveal during the Los Angeles Auto Show later this month, Vehicle Line Director Ian Hoban saying, “Our target with engineering the all-wheel-drive F-TYPE was to maintain the engaging rear-drive character that’s so important to Jaguar sports cars, yet offer even greater dynamic capability.”
