BMW goes the opposite direction, abandoning electric-only platform strategy.

by on Mar.09, 2018

The Porsche Mission E Cross Turismo is just a "study" for now, but expect a production version to follow.

The Porsche Mission E Cross Turismo is one of the big hits of this year’s Geneva Motor Show and while officially a concept vehicle, the battery-electric crossover is expected to soon follow into production the Mission E coupe launching next year.

Both cars will ride on a specially developed platform, dubbed J1. Meanwhile, sibling brand Audi’s upcoming E-tron Quattro battery-car will use the same MLB architecture as its more mainstream models, like the A4, as well as the new Bentley Bentayga SUV.

Electrifying News!

But, going forward, Those three luxury brands are partnering up to develop an entirely new and unique platform they will share for all future electric vehicles, according to a senior company official. Codenamed PPE, for Premium Platform Electric, it will go into all Audi, Bentley and Porsche electric vehicles from 2022 on.

Bentley Plugs In: Bentayga PHEV Debuts in Geneva

British maker sets sights on “a sustainable electrified future.”

by on Mar.05, 2018

One would expect the Bentayga Hybrid to come with a wall charger designed by Philippe Starck.

Pity the poor luxury car owner. Regulators around the world are cracking down on emissions and fuel efficiency and some cities – even a few countries – are set to ban internal combustion engines entirely. What’s someone who wants a product as lavish as the Bentley Bentayga to do?

They might want to consider the new Bentley Bentayga Hybrid making its debut at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. It joins the original, 600-horsepower Bentayga W12 model, the newer Bentayga diesel, and a gasoline V-8 just getting ready to go on sale. And, as strict new mandates go into effect in markets as diverse as Berlin and Beijing, it could eventually give those other options a serious run for the money.

Auto Show News!

“The Bentayga Hybrid is our first step on the road to electrification, combining traditional Bentley values with the very latest technologies,” said the British marque’s new chairman and CEO Adrian Hallmark. “It gives customers the best of both worlds – engaging, effortless performance on the open road and silent, emission-free driving in the city, which will become increasingly important with the ever-changing regulations around the world.” (more…)

Bentley Ready to Plug In with Speed 6e Concept

British brand considering several options for fully electric luxury line-up.

by on Mar.07, 2017

The Bentley EXP 12 Speed 6e Concept unveiled in Geneva shows the automaker's willingness to explore electric alternatives.

Just a concept for now, the Bentley EXP 12 Speed 6e Concept signals the British maker’s readiness to explore various battery-electric alternatives.

Bentley is less than a year away from launching a plug-in hybrid version of its new Bentayga sport-utility vehicle, but Speed 6e explores the idea of going a big step beyond, with a fully electric take on its GTC convertible.

Stay in the Loop!

While there are currently “no plans” to bring the Speed 6e to production, Bentley boss Wolfgang Durheimer tells that he is giving serious thought to the need to add some pure battery-electric vehicles, or BEVs, to the luxury brand’s line-up – if for no other reason than to meet increasingly strict global emissions and mileage mandates. Buy a Bentley and the Gas Station Can Come to You

Luxury ownership rises to a new level.

by on Oct.10, 2016

Bentley owners near San Francisco are part of a new pilot program that essentially brings the gas station to their car.

When you buy a car like a Bentley you expect your motoring life to somehow be, well, different. But how different is it when you’re standing in the rain filling up your gas tank, your new Bentley Arnage sitting alongside a rusted-out Chevy?

In an era when even econocars now offer upscale features like wood and leather trim, upscale manufacturers are looking for ways to differentiate their products. They talk about the luxury “experience,” and offer features like valet pickup-and-delivery when it comes time for service. But Bentley is taking the valet service experience to another level.

As part of a trial project in parts of California, Bentley owners won’t have to suffer the indignity of pumping their own petrol. Using a smartphone app, they’ll be able to schedule a fill-up at a convenient time and place. The pump, it seems, will come to them. (more…)

Better mileage – and it becomes the world’s fastest diesel SUV.

by on Sep.21, 2016

Though available for just a short time, Bentley is adding a new wrinkle to its Bentayga SUV: a diesel.

The Bentley Bentayga has barely had a chance to find its niche in the super-premium market, but the British automaker is already announcing a major update.

Bentley is about to roll out its first diesel engine and stuff it under the hood of the big SUV. It will not only boost Bentayga’s fuel economy but transform it into the world’s fastest diesel SUV, capable of launching from 0 to 100 kmh, or 62 miles an hour, in just 4.8 seconds.

Your Auto Insider!

The launch of the triple-turbocharged Bentley Bentayga Diesel could be seen as especially significant considering that parent Volkswagen AG has been backing away from oil-burner technology in the wake of the ongoing legal problems over its rigging of diesel emissions tests. The Bentley diesel is an entirely new package, however, and the brand is not expected to be tainted by the scandal. (more…)

Bentley Adding More Models; Likely to Go Electric

"Five models in five years" could equal double the sales.

by on May.04, 2016

With its new SUV, the Bentayga, ready for dealer showrooms, Bentley revealed some of its future product plans, including its EV options.

With the new Bentayga SUV ready to hit showrooms, British maker Bentley is starting to plan its next product offensive, and that not only will bring updates of existing models like the Mulsanne and Continental GT, but as many as two new ultra-premium luxury models.

Facing ever-stricter global emissions and mileage standards – as well as pressure to add new zero-emissions models  – Bentley is also giving serious thought to adding a fully electric drivetrain package. That would be on top of the plug-in hybrid version of the Bentayga set to launch late in 2017 or early 2018, has learned.

It wasn’t all that long ago that Bentley was the proverbial one-trick pony. But it has scored huge sales growth in recent years with the addition of the Continental line-up. And with plans to have “five model (lines) in five years,” said Michael Winkler, CEO of Bentley’s U.S. sales arm, the British marque expects to do substantially better. (more…)
