Audi Reveals New A4 – and Drops a Surprise with Q3 Vail

Compact crossover will reach U.S in late '13 or early '14.

Audi has given a mid-cycle refresh to its 2013 A4 and S4 line-up.

Audi will enter one of the fastest-growing segments of the global luxury market, the maker confirmed during a Detroit Auto Show preview, with the launch of the new Q3 crossover in late 2013.

The maker’s Q3 Vail concept made a surprise appearance during a press event that was supposed to focus on the introduction of Audi’s next-generation A4 and S4 sedans.  But as important as those compact models are, Audi AG CEO Rupert Stadler has described the compact crossover market as the “next pillar” it has to “conquer.”

Audi has been doing a good job of conquesting buyers in recent years, global sales surging to a record 1.3 million last year, while the Volkswagen AG luxury brand topped 117,000 for an all-time high in the U.S. market.  The production Q3 could be a critical next step in the U.S., in particular.

Audi makes some modest but notable changes to the A4 and S4 for the upcoming model-year.

It’s never easy to go up against a powerhouse like the BMW 3-Series, and that’s especially true when an all-new version of the Bavarian juggernaut is getting ready to roll into showrooms.  So, it’s understandable why Audi is also getting ready for a mid-cycle update of its own compact luxury line, with updated A4 and S4 models slated for 2012.

Don’t expect anything radical.  Audi isn’t tearing up the blueprints and starting over.  The basic dimensions remain largely the same.  The new model is stretched by a few millimeters – unlike the 3-Series, which grows substantially for 2012.  But Audi aficionados will recognize there are some significant changes, nonetheless.

The most distinctive, however, will be found under the hood, with a range of new or modified engines for the global line-up expected to deliver both better mileage and improved horsepower and torque.  New Stop/Start technology is one way Audi has been able to pull off that seemingly incongruous improvement.

Subaru's WRX STi puts its power to all four wheels.

The day after this week’s blizzard, a co-worker asked if I had driven my all-wheel-drive Subaru or the 2011 Buick Regal I happened to be testing.

AWD traction would seem to be a big advantage, and considering that I have a 55-mile commute, I’ll take all the advantages I can get.

But the Subaru is a 10-year-old warrior, so, while it does have anti-lock brakes, it doesn’t have the latest safety devices such as traction control or stability control. So, even thought the Regal puts power down through its front wheels only, I’ll take the modern car in most circumstances over the older one, even if it is driving all four wheels.

Traction control and stability control are that important. In the old days, you wanted a limited-slip differential to keep the wheel with the least amount of traction from spinning. But traction control effectively replaces the limited slip, in many respects. By selectively braking the wheel with the least traction, the wheel that can get the best bite gets some of the power.
