Debugging Volkswagen: SUVs Supplant Sedans, Hatches

But no more tongue-twisting model names.

by on Jan.17, 2018

One of the first jobs for VW Group of America CEO Hinrich Woebcken was revealing the new Atlas.

Things didn’t look very good when Hinrich Woebcken landed in the U.S. two years ago as the new CEO and President of the Volkswagen Group of America. The automaker had just acknowledged cheating on diesel emissions tests and was not only facing the prospect of paying billions of dollars in fines and settlements but a collapse in its U.S. sales as it was forced to pull off the market all of its popular diesel models.

“The only reason dealers didn’t kill me was that I was the new guy,” the German-born executive said, only half joking, during a presentation at the Automotive News World Congress on Tuesday afternoon.

These days, dealers are a lot more sanguine about Woebcken, and VW in general, though the VWoA chief cautioned that the automaker has a long way to go before he can claim success rebuilding its U.S. operations. (more…)

Infiniti Inspired: But What to Make of the New Q Inspiration Concept

Is this the long-awaited successor to the Q45?

by on Jan.15, 2018

The Q45 Inspiration Concept may not show up in the Infiniti line-up but will influence future product design, officials said.

Infiniti has a long history of teasing us with exotic concepts that eventually translate into slightly more sedate production vehicles. So, what to make of the inspiring new fastback prototype making its debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit?

Have we finally gotten a glimpse of the long-awaited successor to the brand’s original halo car, the 1990 Q45? Or is the new Inspiration just there to tease us with hints of the direction Infiniti will take after a recent shake-up in corporate design management?

What a Concept!

“Our Detroit concept car heralds a new generation of Infiniti,” is all we’re getting from Alfonso Albaisa, the long-time Infiniti stylist who recently was named global design director for parent Nissan Motor Co. The Q Inspiration, he added, it meant to demonstrate Infiniti’s approach to “artistry in the new age of autonomy and breakthrough drivetrains.”

New High Performance EV to Highlight Ford’s $11b Electrification Program

Mach 1 will take aim at likes of Tesla Roadster, Porsche Mission E

by on Jan.15, 2018

Ford is tentatively calling its first high-performance EV the Mach 1, though that could change, company officials told TheDetroitBureau.com.

Ford Motor Co. will nearly triple its investment in electrified vehicles to $11 billion, Executive Chairman Bill Ford announced Sunday night, and one of the first new all-electric models it plans to launch will be a high-performance crossover taking aim at the likes of the Tesla Roadster and the Porsche Mission E.

The Detroit automaker was one of the first to add electrified vehicles to its line-up, but it’s had little success with its initial offerings, industry analysts suggesting they didn’t offer either the range or performance that potential buyers want.

An Electrifying News Source!

Codenamed Mach 1 – a name lifted from a classic version of the Ford Mustang – the high-performance battery electric vehicle will debut in 2020, said Jim Farley, the automaker’s president of global markets, and will offer, “a whole new world…for our customers.”

Schwarzenegger Helps Kick New Mercedes G-Wagen Into High Gear

It may look the same, but it’s bigger, badder and carries over just three parts.

by on Jan.15, 2018

Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche and Arnold Schwarzenegger celebrate the debut of the 2019 G-Wagen.

They both hail from the same small town in Austria and they’re both known for their muscle. So it was fitting that the Terminator, Arnold Schwarzenegger, was on hand for the debut of the all-new Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen on Sunday night.

The splashy event, held at a one-time movie palace on the edge of Detroit’s downtown, featured the same sort of pyrotechnics the one-time body builder was familiar with from his career in Hollywood.

We're Going to Pump You Up!

“This SUV can do anything and everything and that’s what I love about this car,” Schwarzenegger declared as he climbed out of one of the new 2019 SUVs to join Daimler AG CEO Dieter Zetsche on stage.

2019 Veloster: Hyundai Heats Up Its Hot Hatch

Quirky - and proud of it.

by on Jan.08, 2018

Hyundai's distinctive Veloster hatchback is getting a makeover for the 2019 model-year.

There’s something endearingly odd about the Hyundai Veloster.  The Korean carmaker’s hot hatch was a quirky visual standout when it made its debut seven years ago, and it gained momentum with a turbocharged performance post a few years later.

Now, Hyundai’s giving us a sneak peek at the second-generation Veloster ahead of its official debut at the North American International Auto Show later this month. And while it retains some of the quirky and endearing touches of the original – including the unusual asymmetric door layout – it gets a more aggressive look that Hyundai designers like to call a “city rally car.”

Hot Hatches!

Both the base and turbo models are back for 2019. And word has it we just might also see a true performance model, part of Hyundai’s new “N” line, that could deliver as much as 271 horsepower.

Design will mark “shift toward smarter, more compact and less intrusive powertrains”

by on Dec.21, 2017

Pure as the driven snow? Infiniti teases the sedan design concept coming to Detroit next month.

Is this Infiniti’s answer to the Jaguar I-Pace?

Rumors have been circulating for some time that the Japanese automaker was preparing something special for the North American International Auto Show, possibly a long-awaited replacement for its long-gone Q45 flagship sedan. And that is clearly one of the possibilities that could be in store when it gives us a look at the rest of the snow-white concept vehicle teased in this front-end close-up. But wherever it might fit in the line-up, the show car isn’t going to be just another four-door.

Auto Show News!
