Toyota aims to maintain its lead in the midsize segment but faces tough competition.

In the automotive answer to a sumo title match, two Japanese automotive heavyweights are about to square off, Nissan declaring a throwdown against long-time rival Toyota for dominance in the crucial midsize car market.

The smaller of the two makers is betting its newly redesigned Altima can topple the long-time segment leader, the Toyota Camry.  But its rival is clearly not ready to cede dominance anytime soon, a senior Toyota official told

“It simply won’t happen,” said Toyota brand boss Bob Carter when asked if Altima has a chance of winning the perennial midsize grudge match. At the end of 2012, he declared during an interview, “Camry will be the best-selling car in America for the 12th consecutive year.”

Not if Nissan has its say.  “We are expecting to compete at the top level, and we are going to take a shot at being number one in the segment,” said Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn, during the debut of the new Altima at the New York Auto Show in April.

Nissan will offer its new Easy-Fill Tire Alert system on all new and updated models as they come to market starting next year.

The system — which will debut on the 2013 Nissan Altima when it goes on sale in the coming weeks – is designed to not only alert a motorist when a tire is underinflated but also to make it easier to fill it back up.

Federal rules already require the use of a Tire-Pressure Monitoring System, or TPMS, on all vehicles.  But most makers have opted for a low-cost version that flashes a warning when one of the vehicle’s tires is low.  It’s then up to the motorist to figure out which one and then re-inflate it.

More advanced TPMS technology – typically offered on higher-end vehicles – will show a driver which individual tire is underinflated.  But that still requires a motorist to use a special tire gauge to ensure proper inflation, a sometimes frustrating trial-and-error process.

With the launch of the 2013 Altima, Nissan introduces a simpler system that not only tracks the precise inflation at each of a vehicle’s individual wheels but also permits a driver to fill a low or flat tire without a gauge.

Nissan is aiming to dominate the midsize sedan segment with its all-new 2013 Altima.

Japanese automakers have long dominated the U.S. midsize passenger car market.  Or, to be more precise, Toyota, with its Camry, and Honda, with the Accord, have been the manufacturers to reckon with.

But in recent months, the established order has shown signs of coming undone.  Sales of the Camry took a dive – in part due to last year’s production shortages – until the maker ramped up its marketing and incentives and dumped tens of thousands of the sedans into rental and other fleets. The aging Accord has had even more trouble as it approached the end of its lifecycle.

Surprisingly, even though it was also due for replacement demand for the outgoing Nissan Altima, however, showed some unexpected resilience, surging towards the top of the sales charts. And now, with Nissan about to roll out an all-new 2013 version of the sedan CEO Carlos Ghosn has boldly predicted the new model will topple Camry as the king-of-the-hill.

Nissan reveals the redesigned Altima sedan.

What is an “American” car? That’s become increasingly difficult to define in an era when most major international automakers operate at least one U.S. assembly plant – while cars bearing a Detroit nameplate might come from a plant in Korea.

With much of the design and engineering work done in the U.S. – and 98% of its content supplied by North American suppliers, Nissan insists the 2013 Altima is about as American as you can get.

“We’ve been moving in this direction for some time,” said Nissan Americas Vice Chairman Bill Krueger following the “Job One” rollout of the first saleable Altima.

Nissan, he noted, has been steadily increasing the number of products it builds in the U.S. and Mexico, in large part driven by the strong yen.  And “We’ve been localizing (the parts used in those vehicles) at a faster rate,” he said.

With today’s official launch of production of the all-new 2013 Altima, Nissan is loading up for big game, hoping to take down the long-dominant player in the critical American midsize sedan segment, the Toyota Camry.

Long an also-ran, the outgoing Altima has been rapidly gaining ground on both Camry and another midsize segment leader, the Honda Accord.  Nissan is betting that with the debut of the new Altima, which officially goes on sale late next month, it will have the momentum to topple the king-of-the-hill Camry.

“Nobody wants to be the silver medalist,” said Bill Krueger, Vice Chairman of Nissan Americas, following the ceremonial roll-out of the 2013 Altima. “We didn’t design and then build this new car and get the workforce ready just to be number two.  But ultimately, the customer will tell us” which model they prefer.

Nissan’s announcement couldn’t have come at a better time.  With a new federal study showing underinflated tires triple your risk of an accident the Japanese maker plans to introduce a new “Easy Fill Tire Alert” system on its 2013 Altima sedan that takes the guesswork out of keeping tires properly inflated.

The new technology starts with a more advanced version of the tire-pressure monitoring system, or TPMS, required by federal law since 2000.  But it adds even more technology that can help a motorist properly inflate their tires without even using a tire gauge.

Nissan is putting heavy emphasis on the introduction of the completely redesigned 2013 Altima, according to marketing manager Scott Shirley, who calls it “the biggest launch we’ve ever had.”

The new sedan features decidedly more distinctive styling than the old Altima, and offers markedly improved fuel economy – the highway rating for the 2.5-liter I-4 version climbing to 38 mpg, which Nissan officials anticipate will be best-in-segment.  They’re also adding a number of new safety features.  The headlights, for example, will automatically come on when the windshield wipers make four passes, complying with new standards in about half the States.

Both Ford and Nissan are abandoning major hybrid-electric vehicles that might seem perfectly suited for a time when fuel prices are rapidly approaching record levels and consumers are looking for higher-mileage alternatives.

Nissan will no longer offer a hybrid Altima when it launches an all-new version of the midsize sedan for 2013.  Ford, meanwhile, is scrapping the hybrid version of its Escape, which had the distinction of being the first-ever gas-electric SUV.

Potential buyers are getting a first good look at the new 2013 Nissan Altima, this week, at the New York Auto Show where it is making its global debut.  Betting show-goers will like what they see – especially the 38 mile-per-gallon highway mileage number — the Japanese maker is betting it can jump from midsize also ran to a leader in the critical automotive segment.

Nissan's latest all-new model is the redesigned 2013 Altima sedan.

Nissan is the latest major maker to weigh in with an all-new entry into the crowded and increasingly competitive midsize sedan market.

The maker pulled the wraps off its latest-generation Altima during the 2013 New York Auto Show media preview.  It’s one in a flood of new products coming from Japan’s second-largest automaker – which will introduce an all-new version of its only slightly smaller Sentra sedan, later this month, at the Beijing Motor Show.

The new Nissan Altima, declared CEO Carlos Ghosn, “appeals to the desire for a premium appearance without the premium price.”

Nissan offers a first look at the new Altima.

There’s been plenty of action in the midsize passenger car market of late.  We saw an all-new Toyota Camry hit the road for 2012 while key players like Ford and Honda have weighed in this year with offerings of their own.  So, can Nissan be far behind?

Clearly not, as this teaser image makes apparent.  The second-largest of Japan’s automakers – which scored some big sales gains with its outgoing midsize model last month – is planning to lift the covers on its own new entry at April’s New York International Auto Show.


The 2013 Nissan Altima appears to borrow some cues from the maker’s Leaf electric vehicle, if this image is any indication.  There’ll clearly be an emphasis on aerodynamics – and that includes the somewhat bug-eyed headlamps that Nissan developed for its battery-electric vehicle, which not only reduce drag but also shift wind away from the sideview mirrors, reducing cabin noise.
