How Do You Remake an Icon: Ford Reveals Alternatives for F-150

Add the “Bullet Train” and the “Locomotive” and you get the Ford Atlas Concept.

by on Apr.04, 2013

The Ford Atlas Concept at its Detroit debut.

Redesigning an icon is never easy, especially when it’s a proven winner that has dominated the traditionally conservative full-size truck market for decades on end.  But that’s precisely what Ford Motor Co. decided to do with the complete makeover it has in store a little more than a year from now with the next-generation F-Series.

The Detroit maker is being cagey about the exact timing of that launch, never mind specifics of the replacement truck – but it has also made it clear that a key goal will be slashing mass and boosting mileage without sacrificing the capabilities and durability of the rugged workhorse.

We got a sense of what may be in store during the Detroit Auto Show, this past January, when Ford literally dropped in on a media event with the gleaming silver Atlas Concept. And the images here of two other, earlier concepts – dubbed the Bullet Train and the Locomotive — reveal what went into the show car’s development.

Former GM Car Czar Bob Lutz Again Aims to Steal the Limelight at Detroit Auto Show

Lutz will lend his presence to battery-truck start-up Via Motors.

by on Jan.08, 2013

Bob Lutz, former vice chairman of General Motors, with one of Via Motors' trucks.

With his fast quips and tradition of stunts — like driving what was then the new Jeep Grand Cherokee through a plate glass window with former Detroit mayor Coleman Young in the passenger seat — Bob Lutz has been an irrepressible spirit at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) right from its birth as the world premier auto show back in the late 1980s.

This year promises to be no different. Lutz is in line to pick up a new honor on Tuesday during the Eyes on Design awards ceremony – and though he “retired” from General Motors in mid-2010, Lutz has remained an active force in the industry and will be on hand to unveil a new vehicle from his partnership with VIA Motors during this year’s Detroit Auto Show.

Barely a month shy of his 81st birthday, Lutz will unveil an electric 800 horsepower truck and 100+mpg electric Escalade during the NAIAS, according to a from VIA. ”Fisker & are close to becoming household names, is 3rd player in market,” Lutz declared from his Twitter .

Cadillac’s New ELR Spotted in Camouflage

Plug-in to debut at Detroit Auto Show.

by on Jan.08, 2013

There's a Cadillac ELR under the camouflage - seen during tests on the back roads of Southern California.

With somewhere close to 60 new products set to debut at the Detroit Auto Show next week, manufacturers are looking for ways to get their own new products to stand out from the crowd, and has received – and posted a number of teasers and preview images in recent days.

One of the more intriguing shots to land in our e-mailbox comes from Cadillac.  The image you see here may bring to mind some of MC Escher’s surrealist works – or perhaps an inkblot test – but under the camouflage is the all-new Caddy ELR plug-in hybrid set to debut at Detroit’s Cobo Center next week.

The maker has been keeping an equally tight wrap on details, giving just the vaguest outline of what the ELR will bring to the market – and how it will differ from the current Chevrolet Volt plug-in.

“Cadillac customers are going to enjoy the unique features ELR will bring to the market. We’re going to change the way people think about luxury and electrification,” Chris Thomason, ELR’s chief engineer, hints.

First Look: 2014 Audi SQ5 Performance Crossover

Audi’s most powerful V-6 yet.

by on Jan.08, 2013

The 2014 Audi SQ5 will get the most powerful version of the maker's 3.0-liter V-6 yet offered.

Some things are worth waiting for, or so one hopes in the case of the 2014 Audi SQ5 performance crossover making its debut at the Detroit Auto Show next week. It’s the long-awaited production version of the Q5 Custom Concept first revealed way back in 2009 – with some much-needed updates, of course.

Developed specifically for the U.S. and a handful of other markets, the new top-of-the-line version of the Q5 crossover is capable of sprinting from 0 to 100 kmh – 0 to 62.5 mph for the metrically challenged – in just 5.3 seconds, with an Autobahn-ready top speed of 250 kmh (155 mph).

If there’s any surprise, it’s the fact that Audi has waited until now rather than bringing over the diesel-powered SQ5.  Volkswagen’s luxury subsidiary has big plans to expand its diesel line-up but apparently didn’t think Americans are ready to accept the idea that oil-burners not only can deliver great mileage but also quite a punch off the line.

Hyundai HCD-14 Concept Offers Hints of Next Genesis Sedan

First signature car from Korean maker’s new US design chief.

by on Jan.07, 2013

Is this the next Hyundai Genesis?

If you’re wondering where Hyundai might take things when it updates its popular Genesis sedan in a few years you might want to take a close look when the HCD-14 concept vehicle makes its debut at the Detroit Auto Show next week.

The Korean carmaker has offered up this first teaser image of the sedan and while Hyundai isn’t saying much more, the image does reveal quite a bit about what has emerged from the maker’s Southern California design studio, known as HATCHI.

Your Inside Source!

Significantly, the HCD-14 – the name signaling it’s the 14th concept model to come from the California design center – is being described by Hyundai sources as the “first signature car” developed under the guidance of new California design director Chris Chapman. He’s the well-regarded stylist whom Hyundai lured away from BMW last year.

Leaked C7 Corvette Renderings Reach Web

Images reveal interior and exterior.

by on Dec.26, 2012

Renderings of the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette - likely from an owner's manual - have leaked onto the Web.

There are few secrets in the auto industry but General Motors has gone to great pains to keep the lid on images and details concerning the next-generation Chevrolet Corvette. Only a handful of journalists have had a chance to see or hear about the new C7 ‘Vette in advance of its debut at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show.

But now, it appears, a number of details, as well as some detailed renderings, have leaked out anyway. But we’re betting that it will only enhance interest when the Corvette reveal takes place in little more than two weeks.

Come Along for the Ride!

We owe a tip of the hat to Autoblog for nabbing these images which first appeared on the Corvette Forum but which were then quickly pulled back down.

The renderings, which appear to come from an owner’s manual or service guide, reveal a more European design that would seem to be in line, dimensionally, with the likes of a Porsche 911.  A large grille is located directly below the steeply raked headlamps. There are large air exhausts behind the front wheels which could be used for brake cooling as well as to exhaust air from the engine compartment.

Toyota Furia Concept Could be New Corolla

“Exciting new sedan” making Detroit Auto Show debut.

by on Dec.21, 2012

The honeycomb grille and lamp assembly is one of the more distinctive details Toyota is revealing about the Furia Concept.

To answer the most obvious question, it’s not furry.  It’s the Spanish word for “fury,” but interpreted by the Japanese this new concept car could just be the upcoming replacement for the long-in-the-tooth Toyota Corolla.

The industry giant plans to unveil the Furia Concept at the Detroit Auto Show, a few weeks from now and from the teaser Toyota has released it appears to be a midsized sports sedan.

These stills and a separate video provide a hint of some intriguing details, such as the distinctive honeycomb headlight assembly carbon fiber trunk lip spoiler, ultra-bright LED taillamps and more.

Foreign sources suggest the Toyota Furia also brings to mind the cultish Chaser model that was marketed in many parts of the world between 1977 and 2000 – but which never made it to the States.

Sneak Peek: 2014 Cadillac ELR Plug-In Hybrid

An upscale take on the Chevrolet Volt.

by on Dec.18, 2012

Cadillac teases the production version of the ELR.

Officially scheduled to debut on January 15 at the North American International Auto Show, Cadillac is offering a sneak peek at the new ELR plug-in hybrid, its upscale take on the Chevrolet Volt.

More accurately know as an “extended-range electric vehicle,” or E-REV, the Caddy ELR is expected to not only feature a more luxurious interior but also an upgrade to its battery-based driveline that will deliver improved performance and possibly enhanced range.

Though the maker is holding details for its Detroit Auto Show news conference, Mark Reuss, president of General Motors North America, recently suggested, “The ELR will be in a class by itself, further proof of our commitment to electric vehicles and advanced technology. People will instantly recognize it as a Cadillac by its distinctive, signature look and true-to-concept exterior design.”

Acura Planning to Show MDX Prototype

“Concept” likely to be production-ready – and introduce new electric AWD system.

by on Dec.13, 2012

A sketch of the new Acura MDX "prototype."

Acura will turn to the upcoming Detroit Auto Show to reveal a new prototype of its MDX crossover-utility vehicle. Sources tell it may also use the opportunity to reveal an all-new electrically enhanced all-wheel-drive system that will go into production with the next-generation crossover.

For its part, the maker isn’t saying much about the new MDX. Beyond providing a sketch of the prototype, it suggests in a release that the 2014 model will adopt a new “’Aero Sculpture’ design language affecting both form and function.”

The image indicates the show car, at least, will adopt a version of the much-maligned Acura grille that critics have dubbed the “beak,” though like other recent offerings, such as the production RLX flagship unveiled at last month’s LA Auto Show, it will be significantly downsized from the chromed sheath on the current MDX.

BMW Teases New M6 Gran Coupe

Plenty of power, plenty of space.

by on Dec.13, 2012

BMW will join the fray in Detroit to formally introduce the new M6 Gran Coupe.

BMW has been signaling for some time plans to add an M version of the well-reviewed new 6-Series Gran Coupe. And it’s giving us a first look ahead of the new models debut at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show.

The M6 Grand Coupe will fill one of the few blank spaces left in the Bavarian maker’s performance line-up. Of all its wide range of offerings, BMW has said it has no intention of adding an M7 – instead turning to Alpina for a performance version of its flagship sedan.

News You Can Use!

The new M6 Gran Coupe shares powertrains with the M5 and M6 models, drawing power from a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 producing a neck-snapping 560 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque – which hits its peak at just 1,500 RPM, BMW notes.  That’s enough to launch the 4-door variant of the 6-Series coupe from 0 to 60 in just 4.1 seconds – on the way to a limited top speed of 155 mph.
