Tata Unveils $20,000 Battery Car

An “intimate understanding” of frugal engineering.

by on Jan.12, 2012

Tata used "frugal engineering" to hold the estimated price of the eMo battery car concept to $20,000.

Electric vehicles don’t have to cost an arm and a leg, insists Indian automaker Tata Motors.

Its research arm, Tata Technologies, has unveiled a prototype for a $20,000 electric car that can carry four passengers without adding to the pollution in crowded cities around the world.

“The eMo project symbolizes the coming of age of Indian automotive engineering,” said Warren Harris, Tata Technologies President and Global COO. “It is a tangible example of the capability of Tata Technologies to engineer a full vehicle – a first for any India-based engineering services company,” added Harris during a press conference at the North American International Auto Show.

Harris added, “Because we are India-based, Tata Technologies is intimately familiar with developing markets. Additionally, our experience and presence in Europe and North America means we also have an understanding of developed markets. It’s a combination that provides a competitive advantage to our clients,” added Harris, who noted the company also does extensive work for clients such as Ford Motor Co and Chrysler Group in the U.S.

Buick Back for an Encore

Maker targets emerging compact luxury crossover market.

The Buick Encore making its debut at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show this week.

It wasn’t all that long ago that most analysts were ready to write off the Buick brand, many being shocked by General Motors’ decision not to abandon the long-struggling nameplate – as it did Pontiac, Saab, Saturn and Hummer – when it emerged from bankruptcy.

Senior officials said that was something they were loath to do considering Buick’s strong success in China, where it has been greatly out-selling the U.S.  But sales in both market are on the rise and a wave of new products, such as the Regal and recently added Verano can explain.

All the Auto Show News!

But now Buick is hoping to be out in front, rather than lagging behind rivals as it continues its push to develop a niche it has been describing as “affordable luxury.” And the latest model to target that self-defined segment is the Buick Encore which is getting its world debut at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show.

VW Rolls Out Battery “Bugster,” and Hybrid Passat

Battery-powered “great comeback.”

The Beetle-based Volkswagen E-Bugster battery-electric concept car.

Volkswagen bugged out on its Detroit Auto Show news conference, the maker introducing the Beetle-based E-Bugster concept car, along with a hybrid version of its popular Jetta model.

Both are intended to show that despite its slow entry into the world of electrification, Volkswagen aims, by 2018, “to be the most sustainable automaker and will further invest heavily in research and development,” according to VW AG CEO Martin Winterkorn.

The E-Bugster, short for Electric-Bug speedster is the latest in VW’s growing line-up of Blue e-motion concepts.  It’s not your classic convertible but features a chopped and removable roof that gives it a look that some might find more like the new Mini Roadster than the classic Volkswagen Beetle.

First Look: 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe

More aggressive design, improved performance.

by on Jan.09, 2012

Hyundai's Genesis Coupe gets a more aggressive look for 2013 - along with the added power to back that up.

The original Hyundai Genesis sedan scored a grand slam for the Korean carmaker, winning the coveted North American Car of the Year trophy and plenty of demand for a first entry into the luxury market.  But while the little coupe that shared the Genesis name was certainly fun to drive it didn’t quite find its own identity.

Hyundai hopes to resolve that problem with the 2013 update of the Genesis Coupe, giving the 2-door a more luxurious, refined and decidedly aggressive appearance and backing that up with some serious performance credentials.

The overall look and key dimensions of the rear-drive Genesis Coupe remain the same, with the 2-door featuring the long wheelbase and short overhangs of a classic sports coupe.  Nonetheless, changes are visible right up front, where the 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe sports a more aggressive front fascia, trapezoid grille, lamps and hood heat extractor cues – which, unfortunately are just that; they are not actually functional.

Buick continues to reveal more of the new Encore crossover scheduled for debut next month.

Like the most skilled ecdysiast the Buick Encore is performing a slow and seductive striptease in advance of its January 10 debut at the North American International Auto Show.

The latest pictures – along with a close-up released earlier — confirm what we already know: that the Encore will be the newest and smallest crossover in the Buick line-up, and that it will feature not only the brand’s trademark waterfall grille but the classic Buick portholes, here on the Encore’s hood.

What else?  Here’s what else we can reveal:

The 2013 Encore is believed to be sized to go up against more mainstream models, such as the newly redesigned Honda CR-V, though the Buick Encore will be targeted at a more luxurious segment of the market, just beneath General Motors’ highline Cadillac brand.

GM Planning Big Detroit Auto Show Splash

At least four new products will debut, including Cadillac ATS.

by on Dec.05, 2011

Cadillac will show the production version of the ATS at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show.

General Motors Co. is vowing to make a splash at the North American International Auto Show next month with at least four new products set to make their debut.

Mary Barra, GM senior vice president of global development, said that one of the vehicles scheduled for introduction at the NAIAS will be the Cadillac ATS, the domestic marque’s new entry-level luxury sedan.

“ATS is a crucial part of Cadillac’s expansion,” Barra told the Detroit Automotive Press Association.

After several mis-steps, Cadillac is in the midst of a rapid expansion that will include both the ATS and the big STS premium luxury sedan introduced at the L.A. Auto Show last month.  GM officials have told that additional products are also under development to fill in other luxury segments where Caddy currently doesn’t compete.  But the ATS – which slots below the Cadillac CTS – could be critical for the brand.

Nissan, Infiniti Return to Detroit as Sponsors Extend ’12 Show’s Press Preview

Upcoming show will offer full two days of media previews.

by on Jun.17, 2011

The hordes the annual Detroit Auto Show got underway. The media days will double in 2012.

Weary automotive journalists will still wear out the shoe leather, but they’ll have a full two days to complain about their aching feet, next January, when the North American International Auto Show returns to a more traditional two-day media preview.

The shift will be accompanied by the return of Nissan and its luxury brand, Infiniti, which pulled out of the Detroit Auto Show, three years ago, as part of budget-cutting measures.

“We’re thankful that NAIAS is, once again, an important part of Nissan’s international auto show strategy,” Bill Perkins, chairman of the NAIAS, said.

Nissan was one of a number of makers that pulled out of the Detroit show as the automotive industry began to plunge into its worst recession in more than half a century.  Officially, most makers chose to downplay the financial reasons, insisting that they wanted to concentrate their efforts on those auto shows – and other marketing efforts – where they felt they got a better return for the dollar.
