Chrysler Going Mainstream with 8-Speed; 9-Speed Automatic Coming

New gearboxes cut “a chunk” out of fuel consumption.

by on Sep.01, 2011

V-6 versions of the 2012 Dodge Charger will get the new 8-speed gearbox, as will the V-6 Chrysler 300.

Chrysler will become the first automaker to go mainstream with a fuel-saving 8-speed automatic gearbox, but has learned the Detroit maker is also developing an even more efficient 9-speed transmission.

Automakers are searching frantically for ways to improve mileage as they struggle to meet the 35.5 mpg fuel economy target for 2016 – and the 54.5 mpg standard recently enacted for 2025.  While all sorts of advanced – and expensive – options are under study, makers like Chrysler have realized they can achieve significant efficiencies simply improving the transmissions already found in every car on the road.

A Good Investment - And its Free!

The new Chrysler 8-speed will debut on the V-6 versions of the Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300.  They will deliver a full 4 mile per gallon increase in highway mileage, boosting the Dodge sedan to 31 mpg on the highway.

“That’s a chunk,” said Chrysler spokesman Vince Muniga, who also confirmed that “We’re working on a 9-speed” automatic gearbox that is expected to be even more efficient.

Chrysler Lifts Covers On 300 Sedan Exterior

Future retro.

The 2012 Chrysler 300 will reach showrooms earlier in the first quarter of the new year.

Was it worth the wait?  Chrysler is finally giving us a full glimpse of the next-generation 300 sedan – after offering up only a tempting tease earlier in the month.

The images here reveal a retro-futuristic design that picks up where the outgoing sedan left off.  Launched in 2004, the Chrysler 300 flagship offered a dramatic rear-drive design that helped carry Chrysler through some of its darkest moments – including last year’s bankruptcy.

The new car will have to prove that beauty is more than skin deep, however, and that means delivering more technology, improved quality and, in particular, a more refined and crafted interior.

The front end of the new 300 features an every-so-slightly more raked grille, one that uses a new seven-blade design featured in what Chrysler describes as “liquid chrome.”  Meanwhile, “key slot” headlamps form a C-shape and are surrounded by LED daylight running lamps.

Chrysler Teases With First Look At New 300 Sedan

An inside job.

Chrysler is redesigning the new 300 sedan from the inside out, these shots suggest.

While Chrysler is today struggling to rebuild its reputation for dramatic – and occasionally outrageous – design, nothing in its line-up today better recalls its former glory days than the 300 sedan.  Its retro, slightly menacing styling made the big 4-door an instant success.

Delayed due to the maker’s bankruptcy and change in ownership, the next-generation Chrysler 300 won’t be ready for market until 2012.  But as the maker sets out to demonstrate that it really does have a future it has decided to release a few teaser shots hinting at what the new flagship sedan will look like.

Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait for full exterior images, these first pics hinting at a striking remake that is almost European in flair, the LED-accented headlamps, for example, suggesting nothing less than the latest version of the new Audi A8, though another shot shows a strong, near-vertical chromed grille that indicates designers have maintained, albeit refined, the very American, in-your-face boldness that worked so well for the last 300.
