F1 Legend Niki Lauda Dead at 70

“It was the most courageous thing I ever witnessed in sport.”

by on May.21, 2019

Few expected Niki Lauda to survive his crash at the Nurburgring on Aug. 1, 1976.

He was born to be a banker, like the rest of his patrician, Austrian family. So, when Niki Lauda asked his grandfather for the financial help he needed to land a ride on the Formula One circuit, he was cut off. Lauda eventually found a way to raise the money on his own, lining up a loan against his life insurance policy.

It was a risky bet, but Niki Lauda’s life was an ongoing gamble, whether on the track or in business, something that became all too apparent during a crucial race at Germany’s Nurburgring on August 1, 1976. Ironically, he had called for a boycott just a week before because of the lack of safety features on the winding course. But when the green flag dropped, Andreas Nikolaus Lauda was positioned at the front of the pack, despite a blinding downpour, determined to grab the lead against his F1 arch-rival James Hunt.

On the second lap, Lauda’s Ferrari spun out, hit an embankment and burst into flames. Trapped in the car, his borrowed helmet having slipped off, Lauda suffered massive burns that few thought he’d be able to survive. After slipping into a coma, a priest delivered last rites. Yet, somehow, Lauda pulled through, though the injuries were severe, the fire burning off most of his right ear and hair, as well as his eyelids, while searing his lungs.

Deal or No Deal Makes for a Great Deal for Ford

Hinrichs offers Ford retiree and sons lunch with Chairman Ford.

by on Jan.31, 2019

Ford retiree John West, center, was joined by Ford's Joe Hinrichs, right, during Deal or No Deal last night, where West walked away with $200,000.

As other automakers like Fiat Chrysler, Hyundai and others seek top time slots for television ads during this weekend’s Super Bowl, Ford may have beaten them all to the punch after last night’s Deal or No Deal.

Last night’s game show featured 64-year-old Ford Motor Co. retiree John West, who was nominated for the show on CNBC by his five sons. The very clearly pro-Detroit family took home a nice chunk of change and unexpected surprise … or two.

News You Can Trust!

The appearance was very Ford themed. While talking about Detroit and specifically his time at Ford Motor Co., there were two other ties to the Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker. (more…)

Chevy Launches Expansive Marketing Blitz for Silverado

Brand hitting new and old media to hype latest truck.

by on Jan.09, 2019

Chevrolet's new promotional blitz for the new Silverado includes a new TV ad titled "A Little Bit Country, A Little Bit Rock 'n Roll."

Chevrolet has launched a broad new marketing campaign to bolster the sales of the all-new 2019 Silverado that includes an alliance with Amazon, the top retailer in the U.S.

The marketing campaign began with a traditional television advertising blitz during the College Football Playoff National Championship this week with the debut of the new 60-second TV commercial “A Little Bit Country, A Little Bit Rock n’ Roll” and carried over onto late-night television.

News Now!

The campaign comes as the Silverado is feeling some intense pressure from its main rivals Ram and Ford. Ram sales are steadily closing the gap with Silverado. Ram sold 500,000 units in 2017, but sales increased 7% to 536,980 while Chevrolet’s sale were essentially 585,561 in part because GM was re-fitting its plants to bring on the new version of the Silverado.  (more…)

Audi Taps the Iron Man to Reveal New e-tron GT

Third Audi EV will also be one of its fastest cars ever.

by on Nov.28, 2018

Actor and Audi fan Robert Downey Jr., left, and designer Marc Lichte, pull the covers off the new Audi e-tron GT sports car in Los Angeles.

We got a hint of what Audi has in mind as it launches its first performance electric car earlier this week with some intentionally blurry images of the upcoming e-tron GT. Now, the automaker has put the battery-electric sports car into sharp focus with the help of the “Iron Man,” actor Robert Downey Jr.

A serious Audi fan himself, Downey paired up with designer Marc Lichte to lift the covers off the e-tron GT during a media sneak peek in downtown Los Angeles ahead of the car’s formal debut at the L.A. Auto Show.

Global News!

“I’ve been having an extramarital affair for a decade – with a brand,” the actor joked, as he and the designer smiled for photographers gathered at the invitation-only event. (more…)

Ghosn Scandal Could Fracture Renault-Nissan Alliance

Handling of allegations against Ghosn raising questions.

by on Nov.23, 2018

Carlos Ghosn was formally ousted as Nissan Chairman by the automaker's board on Thursday.

With relatively little debate, Nissan’s board voted to oust Chairman Carlos Ghosn on a Thursday afternoon emergency meeting at its headquarters in Yokohama, the latest move in a scandal that could see the man credited with saving the company remain in Japanese police custody for another week or more.

The 64-year-old Ghosn, who helped save the Japanese automaker in 1999 after it received a massive capital infusion from French carmaker Renault SA, was arrested on Monday upon returning to Japan and accused of both under-reporting his income by as much as $45 million, while also misusing company assets. Japanese media on Wednesday reported the Brazilian-born executive would remain in detention in Tokyo until prosecutors decide whether to bring a formal indictment.

Beyond the Headlines!

The arrest follows what Nissan CEO Hirota Saikawa described as a months-long investigation triggered by a “whistleblower.” But there are some questioning exactly what the case really involves, with the board of Nissan’s French alliance partner Renault SA notably choosing not to oust Ghosn as its own CEO while waiting for clear evidence. Several sources NBCNews.com spoke to went further, questioning why Ghosn was even arrested.

Euro Football Legend David Beckham Lends a Hand To Vietnam’s New VinFast Brand

Asian automaker set to launch production by mid-2019.

by on Oct.02, 2018

The VinFast Lux A 2.0 is based on the prior-generation BMW 5-Series platform.

There have been a few surprising moments at an otherwise lackluster 2018 Paris Motor Show, and several of them came from sources you wouldn’t expect, notably the debut of the first two new models from Vietnam’s first real carmaker, VinFast.

Of course, it didn’t hurt to have European football star David Beckham on the stand when the Lux A sedan and Lux SA sport-utility vehicle rolled out on Tuesday morning. The two will go into production by the third quarter of 2019 at an all-new factory build largely upon land reclaimed from Haiphong Harbor. Giving real meaning to the second part of its name, VinFast plans to add two more models, one all-electric, to its line-up by the end of next year.

Beyond the Headlines!

“Our ultimate goal is to become a world-class automobile manufacturer with a footprint in markets around the world,” said the start-up’s CEO Jim DeLuca, a former General Motors Asia hand who came out of retirement to help launch the company in 2017. (more…)
