The turnstiles are spinning at the Javits Convention Center and for good reason. The 2018 New York International Auto Show is winning raves as the year’s most significant North American event, with dozens of significant debuts.

This year’s NAIAS covered plenty of ground: from long-range electric vehicles to high-powered performance cars – even some high-performance electric vehicles. Followers of automotive design will have plenty to talk about, too. The show underscores all the dramatic changes sweeping through the auto industry, even on the retail side, as more manufacturers announce new subscription programs.

Kia Offers Up New, Upgraded Cars, CUV in NYC

New York debuts hitting showrooms later this year.

Kia gave its best-selling midsize sedan, the Optima, a refresh for the 2019 model year.

Automakers are really focused on the more than half of new vehicle buyers looking for something other than cars and minivans; however, Kia took the occasion of the New York Auto Show to remind the world that they still make those vehicles too.

The South Korean automaker unveiled three new vehicles – Optima, Sedona and K900 – in the Big Apple.

The Optima is Kia’s best-selling midsize sedan and gets a refresh for the 2019 model year. Midsize vehicles are still big sellers in the U.S., right behind trucks and utility vehicles, so getting an updated Optima into the market is important. (more…)

Volvo’s Subscription Service Off to Fast Start

Volvo Cars new subscription service that kicked off by offering the XC40 is already succeeding.

Anders Gustafsson, president and CEO of Volvo Cars USA, said during the company’s press conference at the New York International Auto Show that the company’s new subscription service launched with the introduction of the new XC40 is already off to a promising start.

Volvo expected subscriptions, where customers pay one flat price, to account for about 10% of XC40’s total sales. “We’ve already hit that,” he said. In addition, Volvo customers can now sign up for a subscription through Apple Pay. (more…)

Audi’s Bringing Sport-y Back With New RS 5 Sportback

German premium brand looking to compete with M-class and AMG models.

Audi is looking to compete with BMW's M-class and Mercedes' AMG brands with the new Audi Sport lineup, including the RS 5 Sportback.

Audi Sport, Audi’s high-performance line, launched its latest RS model – the Audi RS 5 Sportback – during the press days for the 2018 New York International Auto Show.

The RS 5 Sportback offers a balance of high design and driving dynamics and is scheduled to go on sale in the second half of 2018.

Acura Unwraps Next-Generation RDX

The third generation RDX is the quickest, best-handling RDX ever, with top-class cabin and cargo space.

A new chapter for Acura began this week as it uncovered the next-generation RDX during the press days at the New York International Auto Show.

The re-engineered 2019 RDX is described as the first of a new generation of Acura vehicles that deliver top-notch performance, a more spacious and luxurious cabin as well as key technology and features.

Alfa Romeo Stelvio and Giulia Show Off Nero Edizione Package

Alfa Romeo rolled out its Nero Edition appearance package for the Giulia and Stelvio at NYIAS.

Alfa Romeo continues to grow its presence in North America carefully and patiently with the Giulia and Stelvio models, particularly the Quadrifoglio versions, looking to endear itself to mavens past and future.

However, this calculated rollout of product occasionally needs a little boost to remind folks that Alfa is around and viable. To that end, the brand rolled out its Nero Edizione package for both vehicles at the New York International Auto Show.

Volvo XC60 Lands Honors as World Car of the Year

Six World Car Awards help open 2018 NY Auto Show.

Volvo's Anders Gustafsson accepts the trophy for the World Car of the Year for the XC60.

Volvo racked up another award for its expanding line-up of SUVs as the 2018 New York International Auto Show opened up its annual media preview.

Already honored as North American Utility Vehicle of the Year, the Volvo XC60 expanded its reach by nabbing the title “World Car of the Year,” the most prestigious of six trophies handed out by a jury of 82 automotive journalists from around the world.

The choice of the Volvo was significant on several levels, as was the fact that “all three of the finalists are SUVs,” noted World Car Chairman Peter Lyon. “That’s definitely a sign of the times.” (more…)

Lincoln Hopes to Take Wing with New Aviator SUV

Midsize luxury ute will offer PHEV option.

The Lincoln Aviator Concept breaks ground ahead of the opening of the NY Auto Show.

When you’re struggling to gain some altitude it helps to have a good aviator on hand. Make that Aviator, the all-new version of what had been known as the Lincoln MKT. The new model, making its debut at the New York International Auto Show, is more than just a new name, however, getting an all but complete, ground-up makeover.

One of two new SUVs coming for the brand by 2020, the new Lincoln Aviator is part of an aggressive push aimed at rebuilding a once shining star in the American luxury firmament while also helping Lincoln gain ground in what has become its fastest-growing market, China.

That’s where the new Aviator could see the strongest demand for its optional plug-in hybrid drive system, especially considering the tough new zero-emissions mandates Chinese regulators put in place late last year.

Cadillac’s Compact XT4 Crossover Breaks Cover in NY

Cadillac is finally ready to play in one of the fastest growing and most competitive markets going: small luxury crossovers.

There’s been a big gap in the Cadillac line-up, and that’s been a major headache for the U.S. luxury brand, leaving it on the sidelines as key competitors, such as BMW, Mercedes and Lexus have been able to take advantage of the growing market for compact crossovers.

But the wait is over, declared Caddy President Johan de Nysschen, as he pulled the wraps off the long-awaited XT4 during a media preview ahead of the opening of the New York International Auto Show. Slotting in below the current Escalade and XT5 offerings, the Cadillac XT4 could become one of the brand’s most important additions since the original CT4 introduced the Art & Science design language.

Mercedes-AMG Muscling Up the C-Class Line-UP

The new Mercedes C63 S Coupe comes with two V-8 engine options, one of which propels the two-door from 0-to-60 mph in 3.8 seconds.

There was a time when Mercedes’ AMG models were as rare as the proverbial hen’s teeth. These days, however, it’s rare to find a model line that doesn’t get the AMG treatment.

So, it’s likely going to surprise few to see the three new AMG models headlining the German automaker’s big display at this year’s New York International Auto Show. Mercedes-AMG is giving its special touch, this time around, to three C-Class models: the C63 sedan, coupe and Cabriolet.
