Could another sign change be in Fiat Chrysler's future?

What appeared to be a two-horse race to partner up with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. is now just down to one – Renault SA – with a deal potentially announced as early as Monday.

The deal, which was reported first by Bloomberg News, not only provides some each company with a strong ally to shore weak areas, it also opens the door to a potential deal with the Renault Nissan Alliance.

Tesla Updating Software After Latest Battery Fire

Two recent incidents raise new concerns about EV safety.

A security camera caught images of a Tesla spontaneously catching fire in a Hong Kong garage.

Responding to the latest in a series of fires involving its electric vehicles’ battery packs, Tesla will updated its digital control software.

The move comes in the wake of a pair of fires in China, a critical market for the manufacturer, both involving parked vehicles. Since the original Tesla Model S was introduced, the company’s products have been involved in more than a dozen vehicle fires.

“As we continue our investigation of the root cause, out of an abundance of caution, we are revising charge and thermal management settings on Model S and Model X vehicles via an over-the-air software update that will begin rolling out today, to help further protect the battery and improve battery longevity.” Tesla said in a statement released on Wednesday.

Mitsubishi Motors North America President Fred Diaz said the company is looking to keep up the momentum from the past two years.

One of the industry’s most resilient brands, Mitsubishi is hoping to build on the momentum it has developed during the past couple of years with the launch of the redesigned 2020 Outlander.

Mitsubishi has been the fastest growing Asian brand for two consecutive years and is aiming to make it three years in a row in 2019, noted Fred Diaz, Mitsubishi Motors North America president and CEO, during a lunch at MMNA’s engineering office in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and posted its best sales in this past March since 2004.

Mitsubishi could be back in the U.S. pickup market with an Americanized version of the Triton.

Mitsubishi could be one of the next manufacturers to target the booming U.S. pickup market, according to the company’s North American chief operating officer.

With truck sales, in general, booming, and pickups, in particular, generating a disproportionate share of industry earnings in the region, an assortment of manufacturers have either gotten back into the game or are looking for ways to join established brands like Chevrolet, Ford, Ram and Toyota.

Ghosn Released on $4.5M Bail; Court Limits Contact with Wife

Carlos Ghosn's been released after posting $4.5 million bail. Aside from his previous bail conditions, he can only speak with his wife, Carole, with court permission.

Former Nissan Chairman Carlos Ghosn has been released from a Japanese detention center – again – after posting $4.5 million bail. His release, which was appealed by prosecutors, came with conditions, the most noteworthy being he must limit with his wife, Carole.

Ghosn was arrested the first time last November and released more than three months later on $9 million bail and some conditions. Prosecutors brought new charges against the former Nissan chief and he was jailed again.

He maintains he is innocent of all charges, including producing a video reiterating his innocence, blaming his arrest on Nissan executives. He also blamed the current executive team, led by CEO Hiroto Saikawa, on the falling profits the company is experiencing. He called the current leadership “sickening.” (more…)

NHTSA Analyzing 12.3M Non-Takata Airbags Due to Possible Defect

ZF-TRW produced airbags for six automakers.

The 2011–13 Kia Optima has already been recalled once for an airbag problem.

As U.S. auto safety regulators are attempting to wind down the ongoing Takata airbag debacle, they are now investigating nearly 12.3 million vehicles with airbags that may not inflate during a collision.

The vehicles are equipped with airbags produced by ZF-TRW, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and could be responsible for as many as eight fatalities. The airbags do not inflate due to faulty control units.

Former Nissan Chief Ghosn Smacked With New Charge in Japan

New allegations likely mean extended detention term.

Former Nissan Chairman Carlos Ghosn has been hit with a new charge by Japanese prosecutors.

On the day jailed former Nissan Chairman Carlos Ghosn’s was supposed to be released, Japanese prosecutors brought a new charge against him virtually assuring he would remain in custody for the near future.

The authorities added a fourth charge after finding out that payments made to Nissan by a supplier were allegedly redirected to Ghosn for his “personal enrichment.” Ghosn was already released once on $9 million bail last month. Whether or not he will be released on bail again is up in the air.

“Such misconduct is completely unacceptable, and Nissan is requesting appropriately strict penalties,” the automaker said in a statement. Ghosn faces three other charges, including allegedly understating his income and allegedly transferring personal investment losses to Nissan. (more…)

Tokyo Court Extends Ghosn’s Detention by Eight Days

Former Nissan Chairman Carlos Ghosn accused former colleagues of backstabbing in a video made just before his re-arrest last week.

Former Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn will be spending more time in jail than originally proscribed by the Tokyo District Court. In a move surprising no one, the court extended Ghosn’s detention period to April 22.

He was initially set to be released on Sunday, but was expected to be detained another 10 days so the judge’s move to limit it to eight is a bright spot for the former auto executive.

Former Nissan Chairman Carlos Ghosn accused former colleagues of backstabbing in a video made just before his re-arrest last week.

In his first public statement since his initial arrest in November, former Renault-Nissan Alliance chief Carlos Ghosn tersely and forcefully accused “backstabbing” former colleagues of conspiring to get him fired from his job as Nissan chairman and threatening the Japanese automaker’s future.

Ghosn, clad in a black suit and white shirt, levied the charges in a video made shown to reporters in Tokyo Monday after he was re-arrested last week on new allegations that he used $5 million in company funds for his own benefit.

The former executive had been out on $9 million bail for 30 days, and recorded the video the day before he went back to jail. Nissan Motor Co. chairman also said in the video that rivals focused on derailing a closer alliance between the automaker and French partner Renault were to blame for his current problems.  (more…)

Former Nissan Boss Ghosn Expected to Be Back in Jail for at Least 10 Days

Japanese prosecutors have shown skill at extending his detention, however.

Carlos Ghosn was taken into custody again in Japan after new charges were filed against him by prosecutors.

Carlos Ghosn, the former Nissan boss who was rearrested for the fourth time on Thursday on charges of financial corruption will be detained at the Tokyo Detention Center until at least April 14, a court in the capital city ruled Friday morning.

As they did when Ghosn was first arrested Nov. 19, prosecutors can readily seek a 10-day extension and they have already proved adept at stringing things out even longer, Ghosn spending a total of 108 days in solitary confinement before finally winning bail on March 6. Among other things, authorities could arrest Ghosn for a fifth time on new or revised charges.
