Mercedes Hops up Small Ute Performance with AMG GLC 63

New models sets segment record on the Nurburgring.

by on Apr.17, 2019

The 2020 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S Coupe set a new record for SUVs on the Nurburgring.

Few automakers take their basic products and tweak them to excess the way Mercedes does through its partnership with AMG. The latest is the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 unwrapped in New York.

The automaker describes its newest small SUV as a “stylish all-rounder with racetrack genes.” That description is apt as its newest small ute set a new record at the Nurburgring for its category. The GLC 63 S Coupe ran the famous track in 7:49:369.

Check out the debuts from the foreign makers.

by on Apr.15, 2019

The New York International Auto Show will see dozens of new model introductions this year.

There’s been plenty of talk about the end of the auto show era, and we’ve certainly seen a lot of manufacturers step back from the lavish previews that were the norm in decades past. That said, this year’s New York International Auto Show looks to be a major event, with close to three dozen vehicles making either their North American or global debut.

There’s something for everyone’s taste and budget, from the new, entry-level Nissan Versa all the way up to the special edition Bugatti Chiron Sport “110 ans Bugatti,” a hypercar expected to go for somewhere around $4 million. No surprise, there’s a particular focus on sport- and crossover-utility vehicles, reflecting the ongoing shift in the U.S. market.

Mercedes-Benz Goes Small With GLB Concept in Shanghai

German automaker expands small ute line-up with concept.

by on Apr.15, 2019

Mercedes-Benz filled the gap between the GLA and GLC with the GLB Concept.

Mercedes-Benz designers and engineers asked the question few others had uttered and made it into a concept car: Is there room for a vehicle between the GLA and GLC? Of course there is! A whole letter’s worth thus the GLB Concept was born!

The German automaker took its coupe-like SUV or SUV-like coupe to Auto Shanghai to show off the result: a further evolution of Mercedes’ trend of utility vehicles with lower roofs aimed at giving the vehicle a more car-like feel.

Auto Show News!

“We asked ourselves whether there is still space between the GLA and GLC in our successful SUV range. The Concept GLB is the answer to this question. With it we are demonstrating the creative ideas we have for this segment, too,” says Britta Seeger, member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Sales.  (more…)

Mercedes-Benz Teases Concept GLB Ahead of Shanghai Show

Automaker making sure to cover all its bases.

by on Apr.04, 2019

This rendering shows what is dubbed the Concept GLB but likely is near production-ready.

In a world rapidly shifting from sedans and coupes to sport and crossover-utility vehicles, manufacturers leave open any potential “white space” at their own peril.

That translates into the need to rapidly expand the ute line-up, and Mercedes-Benz will be adding yet another member of its family this year. And we’ll be able to get a good idea of what’s coming with the unveiling of a prototype, dubbed the Concept GLB, at Auto Shanghai later this month.

Auto Show News!

There’ve been numerous sightings of the GLB, wearing various degrees of camouflage, undergoing testing around the world. For the moment, the Schwabian automaker is lifting the veil of secrecy only slightly, offering a teaser image of the forward part of the Concept GLB’s cabin. (more…)

Mercedes Unveiling Four AMG Models in NY, Including New A 35 Sedan

“A point of entry into the world of AMG.”

by on Mar.27, 2019

Mercedes-AMG is introducing four new models at the NYIAS next month, including the new A 35 sedan.

It’s been a busy year for Mercedes, the German luxury marque rolling out an array of new products, ranging from the next-generation CLA to the first model from its all-electric EQ sub-brand, the EQC.

The onslaught will continue in the months ahead, and that will include four new high-performance offerings from another sub-brand, Mercedes-AMG, which plans to reveal four products to mark the opening of the annual New York International Auto Show. Mercedes is lifting the covers enough for us to get a look at one of those four offerings, the AMG-tuned version of its smallest model, dubbed the A 35.

Auto Show News!

“Sport sedans are the origin of Mercedes-AMG and part of the brand’s core,” said Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG. “With our new A 35, we are transporting this history into modern times in the form of a very attractive model that serves as a point of entry into the world of AMG and also appeals to new customer groups.” (more…)

First Drive: 2019 BMW X7

Bavaria’s big boy offers Euro alternative to Escalade, Navigator – as well as 7-Series.

by on Mar.21, 2019

The 2019 BMW X7 shown here in Euro trim heading off into the sunset.

Laissez les bon temps rouler…let the good times roll. And since I’m heading to New Orleans, it’s nice to be rolling that way in the new 2019 BMW X7.

The German automaker was one of the first to get serious about building luxury SUVs with the 1999 launch of the original X5. And as the global market has steadily shifted from sedans and coupes to SUVs and CUVs, it has steadily expanded the range of what the Bavarian marque prefers to call “Sport Activity Vehicles.” The X7 is the latest and most lavish entry, essentially a two-box alternative to the brand’s familiar flagship, the 7-Series.

Mercedes-Benz Provides Early Look at New GLC Coupe

Automaker to debut new model at New York Auto Show.

by on Mar.20, 2019

The new 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe makes its world's premiere at the NY Auto Show next month.

Mercedes-Benz continues to reshape the definition of a coupe with the introduction of the new 2020 GLC coupe that is almost more sport-utility than it is car. The car will make its world premiere to the public at the New York International Auto Show next month.

The 2020 GLC borrows from its predecessor in its exterior appearance. The pronounced front end screams Mercedes while the rest of the vehicle is clearly becoming the German automaker’s hallmark design for the coupe going forward. Not the typically low-slung, athletic-looking two-door, instead the four-door GLC is a mix of performance and capability.

Product News Now!

Highlights at the front end include the powerfully contoured diamond-block grille with an integrated star and single louvre typical of a coupe, complemented by the distinctive air intakes and the new contours of the standard LED headlamps, the automaker notes. (more…)

by on Mar.18, 2019

Mercedes-Benz plans to build the new Mercedes-Maybach GLS at its plant in Alabama for global distribution.

The Mercedes-Benz plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is already churning out the GLS and a few other models, but the German automaker is adding one more to the line: The Mercedes-Maybach GLS.

Introduced in China last year as an EV concept, the Mercedes-Maybach GLS will join the next-generation sport-ute getting ready to hit dealerships later this year, according to Autonews. The plant will build the new Maybach for global distribution, the automaker noted.

Product News!

Ultra-luxurious crossover is obviously playing up the theme from the original Maybach, which had its admirers, but didn’t sell in large enough numbers to build as a regular model in the 1990s and early 2000s. (more…)
