Porsche has been dropping lots of hints as it prepares to formally unveil the newly redesigned Panamera next week. But it turns out you don’t have to wait for that online unveiling or the official public debut of the coup-like sports sedan at the Paris Motor Show later this year.

Along with the teaser images from Porsche, three grainy but quite revealing new pics wound up on Instagram and we’re offering readers a longer look.

Porsche has never been shy about taking risks, whether introducing its first SUV, the Cayenne, or following with a distinctive, albeit controversial sports car sedan. The original Panamera was a true Porsche in terms of driving dynamics, but generated plenty of controversy over its bubble-back rear end.

A more streamlined, muscular appearance.

The next Panamera gets an even more Porsche-like nose with a longer, more aggressive hood. The roofline, meanwhile, is more streamlined, more in tune with the four-door coupe shapes we’re seeing from other luxury manufacturers – from Aston to Audi, BMW to Mercedes-Benz. It no longer looks like an ungainly hatchback.

From the back, the new Porsche Panamera adopts much more pronounced hips, that give the new sedan a more planted and muscular appearance, especially when viewed from the rear. The new model also adopts LED taillights more in line with the rest of the current Porsche family. It also gets a new active rear wing which will pop up at Autobahn speeds.

The Schwabian automaker has a lot of reasons to be teasing the upcoming launch. The Porsche Panamera is second only to Cayenne in terms of global sales and could gain even more ground with the redesign.

The original Panamera was one of the first coupe-like sedans, and a particularly novel concept in the sports car world. The unusual shape of the first-gen model was influenced by the old Porsche 928, a senior Porsche official once told But insiders suggest it was also crafted to fit the maker’s tall former CEO, Wendelin Wiedeking, who couldn’t fit into earlier, more nimble design concepts.

How well he would fit into the new model remains to be seen, but the image of the new Panamera interior suggests it is still surprisingly roomy.

A major revamp was a foregone conclusion considering the complaints levelled by Volkswagen Group CEO Matthias Muller – who served as Porsche’s boss until last autumn. He derided the original model, openly declaring its styling “could be better.”

Notably, the new version of the Porsche Panamera adopts the VW Group’s latest architecture. Dubbed MSB and largely reliant on aluminum, it’s expected to be significantly lighter than the predominantly steel chassis it replaces.

An official teaser image reveals the new LED taillights and spoiler on the 2017 Porsche Panamera.

On the powertrain side, the Porsche Panamera makeover is expected to retain the current 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 and twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8. But expect to hear about improvements in both fuel economy and horsepower numbers. Word has it there will be a new 562-hp biturbo borrowed from the Cayenne Turbo S, as well. Add a diesel or two and some electrified offerings, almost certainly to include an updated version of the current Porsche Panamera plug-in hybrid.
